Azcona establishes new LU D2 hits mark

Sophomore Jefry Azocona established a new single-season hits record in Lincoln's NCAA Division II era during the Lions' doubleheader loss to Saint Thomas Aquinas Saturday. The doubleheader marked the final home games for seniors CarVonte Williams (Cleveland, Ohio/Twinsburg) and Justin McClain (New Castle Del./Del Castle Tech).

GAME ONE: STAC 27, LINCOLN 6
Junior Alex Jones (Bear Del./Appoquinimink) and freshman Wesley Hogan (Washington, D.C./Maret) each had three hits as a couple of big innings enabled the Spartans to post the game one win.

Hogan was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, while Jones with 3-for-4 with a run scored. Several other Lions, junior DeAndre Bowens (Rock Hill, N.Y./Monticello), and senior CarVonte Williams (Cleveland, Ohio/Twinsburg) had multiple hits. Sophomore Damaal Sands (Nassau, Bahamas/Montverde Academy (FL)) had a two-run homer and junior Josiah Lara (Plant City Fla./Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) had a double.

Sophomore Luis Miguel Reinoso (Beltsville, Md./High Point) took the loss, allowing 11 runs – nine earned – on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings.

GAME TWO: STAC 10, LINCOLN 4 (EIGHT INNINGS)
Saint Thomas Aquinas tallied six runs, all with two outs, in the top of the eighth inning to record the extra-innings victory to complete the sweep.

Lincoln had a couple of chances to salvage the split late, including a near home run off the bat of senior Justin McClain (New Castle Del./Del Castle Tech) in the sixth. The outfielder drilled the first pitch of the sixth off the left-field wall for a leadoff double. However, following a one-out walk to freshman Sebastian Iguaran (Port Orange, Fla./Spruce Creek), back-to-back strikeouts brought the rally to an end.

A leadoff walk and a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh had another runner in scoring position, but another strikeout ended the threat. As a team, the Lions were 3-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

The Lions took the early lead as Jones doubled home Azcona, who opened the first with a single. After STAC took the lead with a pair of runs in the third inning, Lincoln quickly answered.

Back-to-back doubles by Igauran and Jones opened the bottom portion of the third to knot the game, and a one-out double by Williams gave Lincoln the lead. Freshman Miguel Agramonte (Fallston, Md./Fallston) singled home another run to give LU a two-run lead.

STAC immediately tied the score with a pair of runs in the fourth. The score remained tied until the aforementioned two-out rally.

The top three hitters, Azcona, Iguaran, and Jones, all had two hits with a run scored, while Jones recorded a pair of RBI.

Freshman Gabriel Sanchez (Anthony, N.M/Anthony) battled through seven innings, hurling 126 pitches to keep Lincoln in the game. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and four walks. The Spartans had the go-ahead in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings only for Sanchez to slam the door.

Lincoln finishes the season with a three-game series against the College of Staten Island. The series begins 3 p.m. Friday with a nine-inning game.
