Box Score Three Lincoln University football players finished with double-figure tackles, but a fourth-quarter burst provided Virginia State with the 42-21 victory over a short-handed Lions squad Saturday in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action inside the Lincoln University Athletics Stadium.
Redshirt freshman Jahad Green led the way with 14 stops, including one for loss and a pair of pass breakups. Senior
Mike Johnson (Edgewood, Md./Edgewood) has 12 tackles and a half tackle for loss, while sophomore Jesse Jackson added 11 tackles, two for loss, and a forced fumble.
After trailing at halftime, Lincoln took its first possession of the second half right down the field.
Freshman Isaiah Freeman completed two of three passes, including a 45-yard strike to freshman Malachi Langley, to get the offense into the red zone. Freeman capped the drive with a four-yard run to pull Lincoln even at 14.
Virginia State reclaimed the lead with a six-play, 54-yard drive, and then doubled up, by forcing a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. The turnover enabled the Trojans to take the 27-14 lead with a three-play, 22-yard drive.
It was a VSU turnover that led to the next score.
Sophomore Kamar Green forced Lincoln's first turnover of the game, a fumble that was recovered by senior Eric Best. Three plays later, Freeman connected with sophomore Dah'mear Triplett from 19-yards out to pull the Lions to within six on the final play of the third quarter.
Sophomore Mahkai Beasley singlehandedly kept the Trojans from extending the lead. Virginia State had driven 64 yards on 11 plays down to the one. But, on the 12th play, Beasley forced and recovered the fumble near the goal line and returned to the 20.
Lincoln drove to midfield, but the drive stalled, and a short punt put VSU near midfield. The Trojans had long scoring runs on back-to-back drives to secure the win.
Freeman accounted for three touchdowns, two of which came on the ground. His two rushing scores marked the first time that a LU player had multiple rushing touchdowns in a game this season.
He finished 16-of-39 for 204 yards passing and a touchdown with 72 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns.
Sophomore Drew Stephens finished with 59 yards on three catches, while Langley had 58 yards on three receptions.
Lincoln concludes the season 1 p.m. Saturday, traveling to Bowie State.
