Azcona with four hits in doubleheader

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Lincoln University baseball team dropped both ends of their East Coast Conference doubleheader with Mercy College Saturday.

Lincoln (4-15 overall, 4-9 ECC) completes the three-game series 3 p.m. Saturday.

GAME ONE: MERCY 7, LINCOLN 5
Back-to-back two-out hits in the bottom of the eighth inning provided the margin as the Lions fell to Mercy, 7-5. It was the third last at-bat loss for Lincoln this season.

Things were looking bright as Lincoln took the lead in the top half of the inning with some one-out action. Sophomore Willie Hines (Bowie, Md./Bowie) (Bowie, Md./Bowie) opened with a double and moved to third on a single by freshman Jefry Azcona (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic). Both came around to give Lincoln the one-run lead on a triple by senior Kashif Hill (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy), who scored on a single by freshman Hilman Truss (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West).

Lincoln took the early lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before Mercy answered with a pair of runs in the sixth inning and a run in the seventh.

Azcona, senior Max Guadalupe (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunication Arts) (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunications), and freshman Alex Jones (Bear Del./Appoquinimink) (Bear, Del./Appoquinimink) all had two hits for the Lions.

Junior Trevon Sutton (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy), 2-4, (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy) allowed seven earned runs on seven hits in 7.2 innings with two strikeouts and six walks.

GAME TWO: MERCY 13, LINCOLN 5
A seven-run fourth inning lifted Mercy to a 10-0 lead en route to the 13-5 win over Lincoln.

Azcona was the lone LU batter with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Hines registered three RBI and three stolen bases.

Senior Rolando Alvarez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth Regional), 1-4, (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings.
