The Lincoln University volleyball team fell in straight sets to Virginia State Thursday in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Manuel Rivero.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• With the first set tied at 13, Virginia State tallied nine of the next 10 points to gain some breathing room and secure the set win.
• A 7-1 run early in the second set, enabled the Lions to take the 11-7 lead, and Lincoln maintained a lead (16-13) before the Trojans started making a push.
• Virginia State scored 13 of the final 18 points for the second set victory.
• The two teams played even for most of the third set, and Lincoln held the 15-13 lead midway through the set.
• But much like the first two sets, Virginia State rallied for 12 of the last 16 points.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORES

• Lincoln didn't have a negative hitting percentage in any set.
• For the second time in third matches, freshman Jaida Lumpkin (Middletown, Del./Middletown) recorded a double-double with 22 assists and 13 digs.
• Freshman Haley Loper (Middletown, Del./St. Georges Technical) led the team with 10 kills on 30 attempts with eight errors. It was the second double-figure kill match of her career. Loper added nine digs in the match.
• Junior Kaiya Lewis (Queens, N.Y./Queens Preparatory Academy) added seven kills, two block assists, a solo block for the Lions.

• Lincoln travels to West Chester 2 p.m. Saturday in non-conference action.
