Lincoln University, Pa. - The Lincoln University department of athletics will recognize 115 student-athletes during National Student-Athlete Day, Monday, Apr. 6. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's recognition will be done virtually on Lincoln's social media platforms.
National Student-Athlete Day is a NCAA Initiative that recognizes the accomplishments of student-athletes nationwide who excel in the classroom, on the playing field and in their communities. National Student-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) and the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society, with partnership from the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations. NCAA involvement began in 1994.
"Today we celebrate our student athletes who make every day special at Lincoln University, "said director of athletics Harry Stinson III. "Their accomplishments on and off the field go beyond wins and losses. Our student athletes serve as ambassadors for our university, leaders on campus and in our community. We celebrate you all and thank you for what you put into your game which we get to witness daily. We are Lincoln!"
The 115 student athletes that will be recognized have all excelled in the classroom, recording a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better after the fall semester. Athletes from all 13 sports and the Lions cheerleading squad make up this academic all-star group.
The Lions football team leads the way with 32 of the 116 athletes that recorded a 3.0 cumulative g.p.a., after the fall semester. Every men's sport has at least five athletes on the list. Thirteen members of the cheerleading squad are also on the list of athletes while 16 members of the women's track and field team will also be recognized. Each of the Lions seven women's teams have at least six members that are being recognized.
In addition to Monday's athlete recognition, the athletics department will also be spotlighting several athletes on their social media platforms during the week in honor of Student Athlete Week.
