Williams Sets Rebound Mark as Lions Cruise to Victory over Bears

Box Score Deaquan Williams (Camden, N.J./Camden) grabbed a school NCAA Division II record 21 rebounds while recording his third consecutive double-double as the Lincoln University men's basketball team cruised to an 82-66 over host Shaw University Thursday night at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Lions improve to 4-12 overall while Shaw drops to 4-10.  The game was designated as a non-conference contest, with the conference contest to be played later this month at Lincoln.

Williams became the first Lincoln player in the school's division II history (2010-present) to grab 20 or more rebounds in a game with his 21-rebound performance.   His 21 rebounds breaks his own Division II school record of 19 set back in December 2018 against Claflin.  The junior forward pulled down 11 boards in the first half and added ten more in the second, with the record breaking 20th rebound coming off his own missed shot with 3:43 left.  Williams also scored 16 points to record his third consecutive double-double and ninth of the season.  The 21-rebound effort is also the fourth highest single game mark among NCAA division II players this season.

Zahrion Blue (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) joined Williams with a double-double of his own with 15 points and 11 rebounds.  Deonta Dunlap (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) led all scorers with 17 points while Jordan Camper (Chester, Pa./Chester) and Bernard Lightsey (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) chipped in 11 apiece.  Blue also had seven assists.

An 11-0 run by the Lions in the first half erased the Bears largest lead of the game and gave Lincoln an 18-13 lead with 9:07 left in the first half. Dunlap connected on two three point baskets while Blue added the five points to key the rally.  Shaw kept the game close and the Lions led by just four with 5:08 left when they closed out the half on a 16-8 spurt to take a 40-28 lead at halftime.

The Lions made their first five shots of the second half, opening the final stanza with an 11-3 spurt to take their biggest lead of the game at 51-31.  The Bears cut the lead to 12 with eight straight points following the Lions run but this would be as close as they would come as the lead never dipped below 13 points the rest of the way.

As a team, the Lions grabbed 61 rebounds, becoming the second Division II team behind Bloomsburg University to record two 60+ rebound games this season.  (Lincoln had 63 vs. Cheyney in November).  Lincoln held Shaw to just 29.3% (22-75) shooting from the field while shooting 39.4% (28-71).

The Lions will conclude their three game road trip in North Carolina on Saturday when they face Saint Augustine's University in Raleigh.  Tipoff is at 4 p.m.
