Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bulldogs Snap Lions' Winning Streak with Strong Second Half

Four players scored in double figures but it was not enough to hold off a strong second half shooting effort by Bowie State University as the visiting Bulldogs snapped the Lincoln men's basketball team's three game winning streak, 89-73 Saturday afternoon at Manuel Rivero Hall.

The Lions fall to 7-14 overall and 3-6 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games.  The Bulldogs improve to 13-8 overall and 5-3 in league play.  In North Division games, the Lions are 2-2 while the Bulldogs are 1-0.

Deaquan Williams (Camden, N.J./Camden) led the Lions with 18 points (7-10 FG) and nine rebounds.  Bernard Lightsey (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) added 16 points while Jordan Camper (Chester, Pa./Chester) chipped in 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  Deonta Dunlap (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) came off the bench to round out the Lions double-digit scorers with ten points.  Keynante Williams (Fredericksburg, Va./Rock Creek Christian Academy) led all players with five assists.

Lincoln held a 12 point lead 30-18 with eight minutes remaining in the first half before the Bulldogs came alive with a 24-6 uprising to take a 42-36 lead at halftime.

The Bulldogs came out on fire in the second half, making eight of their first ten shots as they increased their lead to 18, 59-41 in just over six minutes of  the final quarter. A second run of 18-8 by the Bulldogs gave the visitors their biggest lead at 77-49 with 6:17 left.
Bowie State's lead oscillated between 23 and 27 points over the next four minutes before the Lions produced a 14-2 run to pull within 15, 87-72 with under a minute left  but this was as close as they would get.

Justin Route led five Bowie State players in double figures with 22 points while Juwan Smith and David Belle added 15 points apiece.  The Bulldogs also got ten points apiece from Cameron Hayes and David McCollough.  Route also led the Bulldogs with eight rebounds.

The Bulldogs shot 58.8% in the second half (20-34) to finish the game shooting 48.7% (37-76) from the field.  Lincoln made 24 of 60 shots from the field (40%).  The Lions dominated from the foul line outscoring the Bulldogs 18-4 but was not enough to offset BSU's strong shooting on the afternoon.  The Bulldogs also committed just five turnovers in the game (LU had 14) and outscored the Lions 15-3 in points off turnovers  and 32-22 in the paint.  The Bulldog bench outscored the Lions bench 40-14.

The men's basketball team returns to action on Monday, January 27, 2020 when they host Virginia State University in a CIAA North Division matchup.  Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
