Lightsey Lifts Lions in Overtime Win over Vikings

Bernard Lightsey's (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) basket with 2.3 seconds left lifted the Lincoln University men's basketball team to a 102-100 overtime victory over Elizabeth City State University Monday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.

Lightsey's shot capped an 8-0 run as the Lions overcame a six point deficit in the final 2:54 of the overtime period to capture their third straight come-from-behind win.

The Lions improve to 7-13 overall and 3-5 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association games.  The Vikings fall to 10-8 overall and 3-5 in league play.

Lincoln placed five players in double figures led by Deaquan Williams' (Camden, N.J./Camden) 25 points.  Williams added 17 rebounds for his sixth straight double-double and 12th of the season.  Deonta Dunlap (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) came off the bench to make his first six three-point shots and finished the game with eight for a career-high 24 points.  Lightsey recorded his first double-double of the season with 21 points and ten assists while Zahrion Blue (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) and Jordan Camper (Chester, Pa./Chester) added 17 and 10 points respectively.

The Vikings opened the overtime with an 8-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 100-94 with 2:54 left.  Williams started the run with dunk and Camper followed with a short jumper following a defensive stop, cutting the deficit to 100-98.  Lincoln then forced a turnover and Lightsey broke free for the game tying layup with a minute to go. The Lions defense forced another turnover and Lincoln had a chance to take back the lead. Lightsey then provided the go-ahead bucket  with a fade away mid-range jumper.  The Vikings had a final opportunity but stepped out of bounds on the sideline while bring the ball upcourt insuring the Lincoln victory.

It was a close victory in a game that seemed well in hand as the Lions built a 28-point lead at halftime and led by as many as 30 with 16 minutes left in regulation, only to see the Vikings put on a furious comeback, led by Zaccheus Hobbs.  Hobbs, who had just two points at halftime, exploded for 33 points in the second half, including seven threes in the final 5:48.  Hobbs' final three-pointer was a half court buzzer-beater that tied the game and sent it to overtime.  ECSU outscored the Lions 66-38 in the second half.

Hobbs led all players with 35 points (9-12 3FG).  Justin Faison added 21 points and 13 assists.  Shykeef Daniels also recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Marvin Trotman III rounded out the Vikings double-digit scorers with ten points.

Lincoln shot 50% from the from (36-72) while ECSU shot 46.3% (37-80).  Both teams shot exceptionally well from beyond the arc (ECSU- 47.5%; LU 48.1%).  The Lions, while only shooting 68% from the free throw line, took 11 more attempts than the Vikings, and outscored ECSU on the charity stripe 17-10.  The Vikings had a slim 43-41  rebounding lead and both teams committed just 11 turnovers but the Lions were able to force three of ECSU's miscues in the overtime period- which was a big key to their win.

The Lions are home to face the Bowie State University Bulldogs on Saturday.  Tipoff at Manuel Rivero Hall is set for 4:00 p.m.
