Sampson Scores Twice as Lions Fall to Hornets

Freshman Shoye Sampson (Richmond, Va./John Marshall) scored two touchdowns, providing Lincoln University with their only points of the game as they lost, 58-12 to Division I FCS Delaware State University Saturday afternoon in Dover, Delaware.

The Lions fall to 0-2 while the Hornets improve to 1-1

Sampson becomes just the ninth Lions player(in the modern era) to catch two or more touchdown passes in a single game and the first since Akeem  Jordan caught three against Cheyney in 2014.  Both touchdowns came in the third quarter, both were 12-yard receptions and both culminated an eight-play 78-yard drive by the Lions, the first of which started with just under ten minutes left in the period.

Starting on their own 22 yard line, Eban Jackson II (Los Angeles, Calif./Narbonne) picked up a quick first down on three short passes and the team added another on a pass interference penalty.  A short run by Justin Johnson (Etters, Pa./Red Land) moved the ball into Hornet territory before Jackson hit Deontae Brockington (Randallstown, Md./Baltimore City College HS) with a perfect pass good for 29 yards, moving the Lions to the DSU 18.  Three plays later, Jackson connected with Sampson on a 12-yard pass to the right front corner of the end zone for the score, cutting the Hornets lead to 41-6.

The Lions started their second scoring drive with 5:37 left in the quarter and got a big play early as Jackson found an open Dah'mear Triplett (Elkton, Md./Elkton) for a 47-yard reception, moving the ball into DSU territory.  A 12-yard pass to Jordan Gray (Maplewood, N.J./Abraham Clark) moved the chains again and three plays later the Lions faced a fourth-and-five on the DSU 12.  Electing to go for the first down, Jackson found Sampson open in the back of the end zone for his second touchdown reception of the night., making the score 48-12.

The extra point attempt was blocked and run back for a defensive PAT and the Hornets added a safety and a fourth quarter touchdown to complete their scoring.

Jackson led all passers with 199 yards with 25 completions in 39 attempts.  Triplett and Gray had eight catches apiece while Sampson added five .  Tayonte McKenzie (Washington, D.C./Bell) led the Lions with 94 all-purpose yards(all on kickoff returns).

The Lions return to action next week for their final non-conference contest, taking on Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville North Carolina on Saturday, September 21, 2019.  Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
