Lions Swept by Devils in First Northern Series of Season

The Lincoln University baseball team the northern portion of their season Wednesday afternoon as they faced University of the Sciences in an afternoon doubleheader at Maplezone Sports Institute in Aston, Pennsylvania.  The Devils took the opening game 7-0 and held on the win the second game 12-7.
 
Lincoln falls to 1-10 with the two losses.  USciences improves to 4-9.
 
Jordan Whisler (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara Area) (0-2) took the loss in the opener, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out two.  Kris Morgenweck (1-1) tossed a complete game shutout to earn the win for the Devils, allowing just three hits while striking out nine and walking two.
 
Elias Beltre (New York, N.Y./Jarvis Christian College) had a double in the second inning while Aiden Gomes (Bronx, N.Y./LaSalle Academy) and CarVonte Williams (Cleveland, Ohio/Twinsburg) had singles in the third and sixth innings respectively to account for the Lions offense in the opening game
 
USciences scored twice in the first inning and added a solo run in the second on Justin Skinner's home run.  The devils score once more in the third and three times in the sixthoff reliever Marcos Castillo (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunications) to round out their scoring.
 
In The nightcap, Max Guadalupe (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bluefield College) had two hits and drove in two runs and Kashif Hill (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy) added two RBI as the Lions late rally fell short as they lost 12-7.
 
Trevon Sutton (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy) (0-1) took the loss allowing six runs in just 1.2 innings pitched.  Hiro Mizutani (1-2) earned the win, pitching four innings and allowing the first four Lincoln runs.
 
USciences jumped out ot a 6-0 lead in the second inning talking advanatage of three walks by Sutton while stringing together four hits.
 
Willie Givens (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz Mastery Charter HS) and Sheldon Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) led off the third with back to back singles.  Two batters later givens scored when Jalil Banks (Lynwood, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) reached base on an error on a bad throw by the Devils' second baseman attempted to turn the double play. 
 
The Devils scored twice in the bottom of the third before the Lions cut the deficit in half, 8-4 with three runs in the fourth inning. Guadalupe singled, stole second and advanced on a passed ball to third.  RJ Liverpool (Richmond, Va./Monacan) then delivered an RBI groundout, scoring Guadalupe.  Grant Lindsey (Lynwood, Ill./Prairie State College) singled and Givens and Johnson worked out back-to-back walks to load the bases.  Hill then delivered a single up the middle to score Givens and Lindsey.
 
The Lions made one last rally, this one in the seventh inning.  Trailing 12-4, Lincoln was down to their final out when Banks reached on an error.  Beltre followed with a double, scoring Banks.  Malcolm Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Susan Miller Dorsey) drew a walk before Guadalupe delivered a long double to clear the bases, producing Lincoln's final two runs in the 12-7 defeat.
 
The Lions return to action on Sunday, March 17, 2019 when they host Chestnut Hill College at Lions field.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
