Five players scored double figures as the regionally ranked Lincoln University women's basketball team became the first team in the Division II Atlantic Region to reach 11 wins with their eighth straight triumph, a 94-52 victory over host Caldwell University in Caldwell, New Jersey Tuesday night.
Lincoln continues their best start in program history and improves to 11-1 on the season. The Lions are ranked #5 in the most recent D2SIDA Atlantic Region Media Poll and are receiving votes in both the D2SIDA and WBCA top 25 National polls. Caldwell falls to 1-9 overall.
Kwanza Murray (Summerville, S.C./Summerville (Lackawanna College)) led all players with 18 points (5-11 FG, 6-6 FT).
Skydajah Patterson (Bronx, N.Y./) added 13 points and seven rebounds while
Alisia Machado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Medgar Evars Prep (Grambling)) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Shantel Cheeks (Washington D.C./Rock Creek Christian Academy (Harcum College)) also had a double-double on the night with ten points and ten rebounds while
Kenzie Spencer (Richmond, Va./Henrico) added ten points. DeAshia young had seven assists, her third consecutive game with seven or more dimes.
The Lions scored their first points right off the opening tap (a
Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin (Nyack)) layup) and led for all but 40 seconds of the game. Spencer's three-point shot with 3:50 left in the quarter put the Lions up 11-5 and started a 13-4 run that put the Lions firmly in control 21-9 entering the second quarter.
The Lions outscored the Cougars 23-7 in the second quarter and 30-12 in the third period taking a 74-28 lead heading into the final quarter. The third quarter saw the two teams shoot a combined 33 free throws in the period with the lions making 11 of 16.
A fastbreak layup from Murray at the 8:57 mark of the fourth quarter gave the Lions their largest lead of the game at 76-28. Caldwell finished the game outscoring the Lions in the fourth quarter 24-20 to make the final score 94-52.
The Lions, who lead the CIAA in field goal percentage finished the game shooting 43.3% (29-67), right around their season average of 43.5%. Lincoln also leads the conference in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to just 33.7% shooting and tonight's game was no exception as the lions held the Cougars to just 28.6% (16-56) from the field. The Lions outrebounded the Cougars with a season high 57 rebounds to CU's 30. Lincoln also made a season-high 28 free throws (28-38, 73.7%).
The Lions return to action on Thursday, December 19, 2019 when they host Fayetteville State University in a CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) game. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
