Lions Run out of Comebacks as Broncos Snap LU's Eight Game Win Streak

The Lincoln University women's basketball team ran out of comebacks Thursday night as they fell short in their attempt to overcome a double digit deficit against Fayetteville State, falling 80-75 at Manuel Rivero Hall.

The loss snaps Lincoln's eight game winning streak, the longest in program history and drops their record to 11-2 overall and 3-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games.  The Broncos improve to 4-1 in league play and 5-6 overall.  Lincoln's 11-2 record is still the best start in the 48-year history of the program.

Kwanza Murray (Summerville, S.C./Summerville (Lackawanna College)) led four Lincoln players in double figures with 23 points which included an 11-12 effort from the free throw line.  Alisia Machado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Medgar Evars Prep (Grambling)) recorded her second consecutive double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds and also added three blocks.  DeAshia Young (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Public Safety Academy (Labette CC)) and Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin (Nyack)) added 11 and 10 points respectively.

The Broncos were led by Katisha Hyman's 26 points.  Chantel Williams and Shantel Bennett added 14 points apiece while Jada Faison and Aminata Johnson had 12 and 10 points respectively.

Lincoln struggled shooting-wise in the first half, making just eight of 38 shots while the Broncos connected on 17 of 25 en route to a 41-34 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter the Lions came within three twice, the first with four minutes to go on a pair of Murray free throws and the last with 2:34 left on a Brown three-ball.  Faison added a bucket to put the Broncos back up by five, 60-55 heading into the fourth quarter.

FSU opened the fourth quarter with 14 straight points to take a 74-55 lead with 6:46 remaining before the Lions began to chip away at the deficit.   After the two teams exchanged baskets the Lions scored 15 straight points roaring back from 19 points down to trailing by just four 76-72 with 1:11 left.   Lincoln forced a turnover but was unable to score and cut the deficit further.  Williams and Bennett each made to free throws in the final 30 seconds to help seal the win for the Broncos.

The Lions will play their final game before the Christmas break on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Division I North Carolina Central University.  The game will be an exhibition contest for the Lions.
