The Lincoln University football team enters their ninth week of the season with a daunting task as they travel to face the Bowie State University Bulldogs in Bowie, Maryland. The undefeated Bulldogs (8-0, 5-0 CIAA) are ranked #15 in the AFCA Division II and third in the first NCAA Super Region 2 poll. Bowie State boasts the top scoring offense (39.9 ppg.) in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) as well as allowing the fewest points per game by any CIAA team this season. The Lions, who have shown improvement as the season has progressed, are still seeking their first win of the 2019 campaign following a 33-5 loss to Virginia State last week at Lions Stadium. Lincoln has nearly doubled their scoring through their first eight games this season compared to last year at this time and has shown improvement in most offensive statistical categories. Defensively though the Lions have given up slightly fewer points but are still allowing over 40 per game on average. Their scoring defense in conference games is lower at 38 points per game.

News and Notes:
The Series: Saturday's game will be the 12th meeting between The Lions and the Bulldogs BSU has one all 11 previous contests including a 35-14 win at Lincoln last season.
Last time out for Lincoln: Lincoln's defense limited the Virginia State University football team to a season low 232 yards total offense on Saturday. However the Lions offense again struggled as the Trojans pulled out a 33-5 win at Lions Stadium.
Lincoln held the Trojans to just ten first downs, 99 yards passing and 132 yards rushing; the first two items (first downs and passing) were the lowest outputs by any LU opponent this season. VSU's 232 yards of total offense was also the lowest output by an opponent this season and the second time in 2019 that the LU defense has held an opponent to under 300 yards total offense.
Justin Johnson (Etters, Pa./Red Land) led the Lions with 21 yards rushing. Hunt (4-7, 70 yds.) and
Eban Jackson II (Los Angeles, Calif./Narbonne) (11-23, 80 yds.) combined for 150 yards passing. The two quarterbacks were also sacked a total of 15 times over the course of the game. Triplett led all receivers with five catches for 60 yards while
Deontae Brockington (Randallstown, Md./Baltimore City College HS) had four catches for 36 yards.
On the defensive end
D'Rico Cook (Waldorf, Md./St. Charles) had ten tackles (seven solo) to lead all players. He also added a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and one tackle for an eight yard loss.

Last Time out for BSU: #15 Bowie State plastered #25 Virginia Union by a score of 52-17 last Saturday afternoon in Bulldogs Stadium.
Bowie State rolled up a season-high 594 yards of total offense with junior Ja'rome Johnson accounting for 395 passing yards and five touchdowns and ranked second on the team in rushing with 56 yards. Junior Calil Wilkens was Bowie State's leading rusher with 68 yards and scored a touchdown. Redshirt junior Montez Clay led the Bulldogs receivers with 80 reception yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. The tough Bowie State defense was paced by senior William Flowers with six total tackles (all solo) while sophomore Demetri Morsell and graduate student Trey Lee tallied five tackles each in the win.
Bowie State quarterback Ja'Rome Johnson was later named BOXTOROW National Player of the Week. Johnson, a junior from Washington, D.C., completed 23-of-28 passes for 395 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions in the Bulldogs win over Virginia Union. He also had seven carries for 56 yards for a total of 451 yards of total offense.

Solomon Bassett (Fort Worth, Texas/Boswell) has also been excelling on the LU special Team's unit this season. Bassett blocked two kicked in the Lions game at Elizabeth city on October 16 to add to his NCAA high total. The senior lineman has a total of four blocked kicks on the season, the most in NCAA Division II and one of just five NCAA football players on all levels (FBS, FCS, II, III) to have four blocked kicks on the season. The two blocks against ECSU also mark the second time Bassett has recorded two blocked kicks in a game, the only player on any NCAA level to do so this season.

Bassett and Terrell Earn CIAA Football Weekly Honors
A pair of Lincoln University football players earned Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) weekly honors for their performances in last Saturday's game against Johnson c. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Senior defensive lineman
Solomon Bassett (Fort Worth, Texas/Boswell) earned CIAA special Teams Player of the Week honors while freshman
Hunter Terrell (Washington, D.C./H.D. Woodson) was named the CIAA Rookie of the Week.
Bassett blocked two kicks in the Lions 26-19 loss to the Golden Bulls on Saturday, tying a school record for most blocked kicks in a single game. Bassett become one of just ten NCAA division II players this season to record two blocked kicks in a game and one of just 32 players in all NCAA Divisions (FBS, FCS, II, III) to accomplish this feat. He is also one of just 19 NCAA Division II players to have two blocked kicks this season (tops in NCAA-II).
Terrell caught six passes for 150 yards and scored one touchdown. The touchdown catch was an 81-yard reception, the second longest in school history. behind an 82 touchdown reception by
Trey Thomas against Southern Virginia University in 2009. Terrell also added 67 yards on kickoff returns to finish the game with 217 all-purpose yards.

Solomon has been named to the 2019
Black College Football Player of the Year Award Watch List as announced by the
Black College Football Hall of Fame this morning.
The
Black College Football Player of the Year Award is presented annually to the most outstanding football player from a Historically Black College & University. Former North Carolina A&T, and current Chicago Bears running back Tarik Cohen was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Award in 2016; Bowie State quarterback Amir Hall was the 2017 and 2018 recipient. Bassett is one of just 48 players selected to the watch list and one of nine players from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). The list includes 29 players from two Division I conferences, the MEAC and the SWAC and 18 from two Division II conferences, the CIAA and SIAC along with one independent.
