Four players scored in double figures as the Lincoln University Women's basketball team upset regionally ranked Bowie State University, 66-61 Saturday afternoon at the A.C. Jordan Arena in Bowie, Maryland.
The win is the Lions third straight as they improve to 10-9 overall, 4-4 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association games and 1-0 in CIAA North Division games. The win also snaps Bowie State's 14 game winning streak and is the Bulldogs first loss at home. BSU falls to 15-2 overall, 7-1 in league play (0-1 North Division). The Bulldogs were ranked fourth in this week's d@SIDA Atlantic region Media Poll and were receiving votes in the D2SIDA national poll
DeAshia Young (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Public Safety Academy (Labette CC)) led all scorers with 20 points (12-14 FT) while
Kwanza Murray (Summerville, S.C./Summerville (Lackawanna College)) chipped in 16 (5-11 FG, 3-5 3FG).Â
Alisia Machado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Medgar Evars Prep (Grambling)) recorded her third double-double of the season with ten points and 14 rebounds and
Kenzie Spencer (Richmond, Va./Henrico) provided the big spark off the bench with 13 points (7-8 FT). Murray and
Deja Reynolds (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter (Temple)) led the team with three assists apiece.
Ties and lead changes highlighted the action as the game saw 13 total lead changes and 12 ties. Seven of those lead changes came in the final quarter as the Lions overcame a four point deficit in the final three minutes of play, outscoring the Bulldogs 14-5 down the stretch.Â
Reynolds gave the Lions a two-point lead 50-48 with a three-point field goal three minutes into the final period when the Bulldogs ran off six straight points to take a 54-50 lead with 4:21 left. The Bulldogs still led 56-52 when the Lions began their comeback. Spencer hit a key three-pointer from the left corner with 2:47 left and after a defensive stop, Young went to the foul line for two free throws to give Lincoln a 57-56 lead with 2:28 left.   Young added two more from the charity stripe with 44 seconds left to complete a 7-0 Lions run and give her team a 59-56 lead. Twice the Bulldogs pulled within one but the Lions made seven of eight free throws in the final 25 seconds to seal the win.
The Lions finished the game shooting 80% from the free throw line (24-30), their second consecutive game shooting 80% or better from the charity stripe. The Lions connected on eight of 19 shots from beyond the arc (42.1%) and finished the game shooting 34.7% overall from the field (17-49).   The Bulldogs shot 29% (20-69) from the field, 16.7% (2-12) from beyond the arc and 86.4% (19-22) from the free throw line.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 when they host Elizabeth City State University. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.
