A short-handed Lincoln University women's basketball squad battled with host Fayetteville State University for about 35 minutes but ran out of gas in the final minutes as the Broncos pulled away to a 71-58 win at Felton J. Capel Arena Thursday afternoon.
The Lions fall to 7-9 overall and 1-4 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association games. The Broncos improve to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in league play. The Lions have suited up just nine players in each of the past two games due to multiple injuries.
Kwanza Murray (Summerville, S.C./Summerville (Lackawanna College)) led the Lions with 19 points while
Dominique Allen (Upper Marlboro, Md./Takoma Academy) chipped in ten.Â
Alisia Machado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Medgar Evars Prep (Grambling)) grabbed seven rebounds to lead Lincoln and
Deja Reynolds (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter (Temple)) led all players with seven assists.
Katisha Hyman led all scorers, pacing the broncos attack with 23 points. Aminata Johnson had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Yakima Clifton and Britany Drumgoole chipped in 14 and 11 points respectively.
The Broncos led the game wire-to-wire, scoring the game's first eight points and jumping out to an 11-1 lead midway through the opening quarter.  The Lions closed within five at 14-9 an trailed 16-11 early in the second quarter when the Broncos went on a 15-6 tear to open up a 14-point lead 31-17 with 3:16 left. A layup from
Jamari Tillman (Louisville, Ky./Doss) and a three-ball from
DeeDee Irwin (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) closed the gap to nine at halftime, 31-22.
Irwin opened the third quarter with another three pointer to bring Lincoln within six 31-25. The Broncos responded with six straight points to push the lead to 12 at 37-25. The lead was still 12, 46-34 with 2:29 left when the Lions closed out the quarter with a 6-1 run to pull within six 47-41 heading into the final period.
DeAshia young opened the fourth quarter with a three-point field goal, cutting the Broncos lead to three 47-44 but the Broncos quickly scored seven straight points to again lead by double-digits, 54-44. Two baskets from Allen cut FSU's lead to six, 56-48. The Broncos pushed the lead back to double digits with six straight points where it would remain the rest of the game.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, January 12, 2019 when they face St. Augustine's University. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. in Raleigh, North Carolina.
