Lions Drop Two to Bulldogs in Final Home Games of Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 McKenzie Spencer (Richmond, Va./Henrico) and Diamond Scott (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) extended their hitting streaks to four games as the Lincoln University Softball team lost both ends of their doubleheader against Bowie State University, 15-5 and 16-1 Saturday afternoon at Lions Field.

The doubleheader also marked Lincoln's final home games of the 2018 season and the final home games for seniors Breanna Pigford (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) and Scott.

The two losses drop the Lions record to 2-14 overall and 0-12 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games.  Bowie State improved to 10-15 overall and 7-7 in league play.

In the opener, Spencer, Scott and Pigford had two hits apiece while Tierra Russaw (Westland, Mich./Summit Academy) and Jemiah Groce (Newark, Del./Christiana) rounded out the Lions eight total hits with one apiece.  Spencer also had two stolen bases.

In game two, Spencer narrowly missed a home run when her hit to left field hit off the upper part of the fence and fell in for a double, her fifth two-bagger in the past four games as well as her team-leading tenth hit of the season in just four total games played.  Scott added three hits and scored the Lions only run the nightcap.

Groce took the loss in both games, falling to 2-12 on the season.

The Lions took an early lead in the opener with two runs in the bottom half of the first after the Bulldogs opened the scoring with a run in their half-inning.  Scott led of the game for Lincoln with a bunt single, stole second and advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on Russaw's RBI single. Russaw later scored when Groce reached on a two-out infield error.

Bowie State regained the lead in the top half of the second inning with three runs.  Scott doubled home Fifia Waithe (Bronx, N.Y./Life Sciences Secondary) in the bottom of the second to make the score 4-2  The Bulldogs added two unearned runs in the third and the Lions added another run in the bottom of the third to make the score 6-4.  Spencer's base running produced the third inning run as she stole two bases before scoring on an error.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 12-4 with four runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth before the Lions struck for a solo run in the fifth putting a temporary stop to having the game end via the eight-run rule.   Back-to-back two out singles from Spencer and Pigford set the table for Groce who singled up the middle to score Spencer and make the score 12-5.

A three run sixth by the Bulldogs capped off the scoring as Bowie State pitcher Nicoleen Ochoa retired the Lions in order in the bottom of the sixth to end the game.

Ochoa earned the win in both games to improve to 7-8 on the season.  Bowie banged out 12 hits in the opener, including a home run from tiffany Bearns.  Bearns and Ja'seph Smith finished the game with three RBI apiece.

In the nightcap, the Bulldogs scored at least two runs in each of the first four innings, blowing the game open with a seven spot in the third frame to cruise to the 16-1 win.  Jacqueline Pickering hit a home run amongst the 15 Bulldog hits in the contest.

The Lions got their lone run in the bottom half of the first inning as Scott led off the game with a bunt single.  The senior shortstop then stole second and third before scoring on Russaw's sacrifice fly.

The women's softball team travels south for their next games, taking on Chowan University on April 21, 2018.
