Lions Lose to Panthers

Box Score The Lincoln University men's basketball team placed four players in double figures but was unable to overcome the strong shooting effort from Virginia Union University as the Panthers cruised to a 79-54 win Saturday afternoon at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Virginia.

The Lions fall to 11-13 overall and 6-8 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games.  The Panthers improve to 13-13 overall and 8-6 in league play.

Elijah Bush (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore (Essex County CC)) led the Lions with 14 points and nine rebounds.  Cameron Campbell (Fayetteville, N.C./Trinity Christian ) and Deaquan Williams (Camden, N.J./Camden) added 11 points apiece.  Gevon Arrington (Petersburg, Va./Petersburg (Richard Bland)) chipped in ten points.  Josh Page (Washington, D.C./Rock Creek Christian Academy) led the team with five assists.

William Jenkins led the Panthers with 15 points and 11 rebounds while Alfred Walker added 14 points.  James Paige chipped in 11 points.  Jemal Smith led the team with six assists.

The Panthers shot 54.2% from the field  (32-59) while the Lions shot  33.9% (20-59). VUU also outrebounded the Lions 38-29.

The two teams battled back and forth over the first seven minutes which saw three ties and two lead changes. With the score tied at 12-12 , the Panthers we t on a 13-4 run to take a nine point lead, 25-16 with 7:26 left in the half and later closed out the half with a 12-6 flourish to lead by 13 at the break, 41-28.

Lincoln closed within ten in the first 1:30 of the second half and the Panthers countered with a 9-2 run to push their lead to 17, 52-35.   Lincoln closed within 14, 53-39 at the 14:08 mark that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way as the Panthers expanded the lead to as my as 29 before settling in for the 79-54 win.

Lincoln returns to action on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 when they travel to face Chowan University in a CIAA North Division contest.
