Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Reynolds' Two Free Throws in Final Seconds Lift Lions to Road Win over Raiders

Deja Reynolds (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter (Temple)) made two free throws with four seconds left in the game to lift the Lincoln University women's basketball team to a 77-76 come-from-behind win over Shippensburg University at Heiges Field house in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania Wednesday night.

The Lions improve to 3-5 with the win while Shippensburg falls to 4-4.

Shakira Edwards (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) led the Lions with 23 points (9-14 FG), including 13 in the fourth quarter.  Reynolds added 12 points (5-6 FT).  Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin (Nyack)), DeeDee Irwin (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) and DeAshia Young (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Public Safety Academy (Labette CC)) had nine points apiece.  Young also had four steals.  Alisia Machado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Medgar Evars Prep (Grambling)) led Lincoln with nine rebounds and three blocks.

Ariel Jones led all scorers with 30 points to pace the Raider offense.  Aunbrielle Green added 17 points and 12 rebounds while Lauren Pettis grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.  Kryshell Gordy led all players with seven assists.

The Lions trailed by eight heading into the fourth quarter and opened the quarter with a 7-2 spurt to cut the Raider lead to three 60-57.  Brown's three-point field goal at the 5:48 mark cut the Shippensburg lead to two 65-63 and a steal and subsequent layup from Edwards tied the game at 65-65 just 25 seconds later.   Following a Jones' three-ball with 3:33 left giving the Raiders a three point lead at 70-67, the two teams exchanged baskets over 2:29 with the Raiders still leading by three 776-73 with 1:04 remaining.

Reynolds connected on a layup with 44 seconds left to pull the Lions within one, 76-75 and then came through with a big steal on the Raiders next possession giving the Lions the ball.  Reynolds was then fouled with four seconds left and calmly made both free throws to put the Lions up for the first time in the quarter 77-76.   Jones' three-point shot attempt at the buzzer was short and the Lions had a much needed road win.

Lincoln finished the quarter outscoring the Raiders 27-18 to erase the eight point deficit which was built by the Raiders in the third quarter when they outscored the Lions 23-12 over the first eight minutes to take their biggest lead of the game at nine points (55-46) and erase Lincoln's slim two-point half time lead.

Lincoln made 11 of 17 shots from the field in the fourth quarter (64.7%) en route to a 42.6% (29-68) effort for the game.  Shippensburg shot 44.6% (25-56) from the field.  The Raiders made 8-of-15 shots from beyond the arc (53.3%0 while the lions made 6-of-17 (35.3%).  The Raiders had a 40-34 rebounding edge.  Lincoln also committed a season low 12 turnovers and had a season high nine blocks in the game.

The Lions return to action on Sunday December 9, 2018 with a non-conference road contest at Washington Adventist University.  Tipoff is at 2:00 p.m.
