The Lincoln University women's basketball team got back on the winning track Thursday night with a 71-51 exhibition game win over Cheyney University at Cope Hall in Cheyney, Pennsylvania.
DeeDee Irwin (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) led all scorers on the night tossing down 19 points (4-8 3FG). Â
Alisia Machado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Medgar Evars Prep (Grambling)) notched a double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds while
Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin (Nyack)) chipped in ten points.
Marlon Herring led the Wolves with 22 points and 16 rebounds. Shania Stamper added 11 points.
Cheyney held the early 10-5 lead before the Lions ran off ten straight points to reverse the deficit and take a 15-10 lead. Irwin and Brown each had a three-point basket during the run with Machado and
Dominique Allen (Upper Marlboro, Md./Takoma Academy) each adding a basket to round out the scoring. The Wolves shaved two points off the Lincoln lead to trail by four 17-13 at the end of the quarter.
The lead was still four early in the second quarter when the Lions exploded with a 17-4 run to push their lead to 17, 37-20 with 1:01 left in the half before settling in for a 15-point lead at the half 38-23. Irwin and Machado combined for 11 of the 17 points during the run.
Lincoln's lead oscillated between 14 and 18 points for the first six minutes of the third quarter before the Wolves ran off six straight points to pull within 12, 47-35 with 1:15 left. The Lions then closed out the quarter with nine straight points to lead 56-35 entering the final quarter.
The Wolves would get no closer than 16 points as the fourth quarter progressed and the Lions later increased their lead to as many as 24 following a
Kenzie Spencer (Richmond, Va./Henrico) three-ball with two minutes remaining. Cheyney scored six of the final eight points to make the final score 71-51.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, December 1, 2018 when they travel to play Bloomfield College in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
