Cameron Campbell's (Fayetteville, N.C./Trinity Christian) three point field goal at the buzzer in the second overtime gave the Lincoln University men's basketball team a 94-91 win over regionally ranked Kutztown University late Tuesday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.
Campbell's buzzer beater capped off a thrilling game which saw the Lions (2-2) erase a 12-popint deficit in the final 2:48 of regulation and force overtime against the Golden Bears (3-2) who came into the game ranked third in Monday's D2SIDA Atlantic Region Media poll.
Bernard Lightsey (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) led five Lincoln players in double figures with a career-high 25 points while Campbell added 19.
Zahrion Blue (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) and
Maurice Waters (Philadelphia, Pa./Constitution (Univ. District of Columbia)) both recorded double-doubles on the night with Blue notching 16 points and ten rebounds and Waters adding 13 points and ten rebounds.
Jordan Camper (Chester, Pa./Chester) chipped in 11points.
Kutztown's Anthony Lee led all scorers with 32 points while Moe Williams notched a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Golden Bears built a double-digit lead late in regulation after erasing the Lions six point edge with a 21-6 run early in the second half. Lincoln, trailing by 12 with 2:48 remaining closed out the period with a 15-3 outburst to send the game into overtime. Lightsey had five of the Lions first nine points of the run cutting the lead to three at 67-64 with 1:13 remaining. KU's Kiyon Henry doubled their lead to six with a three-point bucket with 47 seconds left making the Lions comeback just a bit harder.
Comeback they did though. Campbell was fouled on a three point attempt with 38 seconds left. The junior guard made the first two and Waters grabbed the offensive rebound on the missed third shot and was also fouled and went to the line. He sank both free throws to pull Lincoln within two 70-68. Blue had a steal on KU's next possession but missed the driving layup attempt afterwards. Waters was there however and put the ball back in to tie the game. Lee had a potential three-point game winner for the Golden bears but in fell short and the game went into overtime.
Still tied after the first five minutes of extra play, the two teams again battled back and forth in the second extra frame with most of the scoring done at the free throw line. Campbell made one of two to put the Lions up two 91-89 following a quick flurry of one point lead changes with just ten seconds left on the clock. Lee countered with a layup with 4.3 seconds left to tie the game at 91-all. Lincoln drove down the floor and Campbell sank his long three point shot as the buzzer sounded to give the Lions their dramatic come-from-behind win.
The Lions break for a couple of days for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action against another Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference school, Seton Hill University on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at Manuel Rivero Hall. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
