The Lincoln University women's volleyball team hosted Virginia State University Monday night in the first of their two meetings this season. The Trojans came out strong as they defeated the Lions 3-0.
Lincoln struggled in the first set, losing 25-8 before rebounding in the second set to battle VSU before the Trojans pulled away late with a 27-25 win. The Trojans went on to complete the sweep, winning the third set 25-18.
Virginia State improves to 14-6 overall and 8-3 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games. Lincoln falls to 1-10 overall and 1-8 in league play.
Amanda Lee (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park Slope Collegiate) led the Lions with five kills while
Janae Stackhouse (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore PolyTech) and
Kaiya Lewis (Woodhaven, N.Y./Queens Preparatory Academy) added four apiece.
Tierra Russaw (Westland , Mich./Summit Academy) had 15 assists setting up the LU offense. Stackhouse also five of the teams ten service aces while Russaw added three. Defensively,
Tymera Crudup (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) led the team with 11 digs with Russaw adding nine while Lewis notched three blocks.
The Trojans were led by Jailyn Ivey and Myia Jones who had six kills apiece. Victoria Holman recorded a match-high 23 assists setting the Trojan offense. Nine different VSU players had at least one service ace with Zaria Hill leading the way with three. Hill also led the team with six digs while Jasmine Jones added five. Myia Jones also recorded three blocks.
The women's volleyball team returns to action on Sunday, October 7, 2018 when they travel to face Elizabeth City State University. The Viking swept the Lions 3-0 in their earlier meeting this season.
