Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lions Hold Off Broncos to Get Back on Winning Track

The Lincoln University men's basketball team got back on the winning track Friday afternoon as they held off a furious rally late in the second half to defeat Fayette State University 65-62 at Manuel Rivero Hall.

The win snaps a three game winless streak for the Lions who improve to 7-7 overall and 2-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games.  The Broncos fall to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Deaquan Williams (Camden, N.J./Camden) led four Lincoln players in double figures with 13 points (5-8 FG).  Sean James (Newark, Del./Christiana (Iona)) and Gevon Arrington (Petersburg, Va./Petersburg (Richard Bland)) added 12 points apiece while Jordan Camper (Chester, Pa./Chester) came off the bench to chip in 11 points (5-6 FG).  Elijah Bush (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore (Essex County CC)) led all players with nine rebounds while Williams grabbed eight.

Denzell Hosch led the Broncos with 18 points and was a key player in FSU's late rally, scoring 12 of his 18 points in the final six minutes of the game.  Xavier Williams added 11 points and was the only other FSU player in double figures.  Williams also had a team-high seven rebounds.

Lincoln did lead the game wire-to-wire and the Broncos kept things close throughout much of the first half with the Lions holding onto a six point lead at the break 32-26.   FSU's Jordan Brown opened the second half with a basket to close the gap to four at 32-28 before the Lions ran off 11 straight points to expand their lead to 15 points, 43-28.  Highlighting the run was a pair of three-pointers from James.    The Lions still held a 13-point lead with 12:43 left (47-34) when the Broncos started to comeback.  Over the next 3:30 FSU outscored Lincoln 12-4 to pull within five 51-46 with 9:11 left.  Martin Kinsey (East Point, Ga./Woodland), Bush and Gevon Arrington (Petersburg, Va./Petersburg (Richard Bland)) pushed the Lions lead back up to 12 at 58-46 before the Broncos again cut into the LU lead.

Hosch followed Arrington's basket with a three-point field goal, triggering a 16-5 uprising that brought the Broncos within one 63-62 with 2:25 left.  Hosch had 12 of the Broncos' 16 points during the rally.  The Lions only points during this 3:30 span came on a dunk from Camper and a three-ball from James (his fourth of the game).

The Lions turned the ball over following Hosch's last basket from deep but gave it right back when FSU's Xavier Williams was called for an offensive foul with 1:56 left.  Twenty-eight seconds later Deaquan Williams (Camden, N.J./Camden) provided the final points of the game with two free throws to seal the win for the Lions.  The Broncos had three shots to tie the score in the final 66 seconds but were unable to convert.

FSU and Lincoln both made 25 field goals on the afternoon with the Lions gaining the advantage from long range with ten three-point baskets to six for the Broncos.  Both teams were about even from the free throw line with FSU making 6-of-8 and Lincoln 5-of-7. The Lions also held the rebounding edge 41-36.

The Lions return to action on Saturday with a home CIAA crossover match with St. Augustine's University.  Tipoff is at 4:00 p.m.  Admission is free.
