Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lions Defeat Vikings in Overtime Thriller

The men's basketball teams from Elizabeth City State University and Lincoln University needed two overtimes to decide their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) North Division contest on Saturday in Elizabeth City.  When the dust finally settled the Lions in part to a perfect mark from the free throw line in the second overtime came away the victor, 82-78.

Lincoln evens their record at 9-9 overall and 4-4 in CIAA games.  The Vikings fall to 7-7 overall and 1-4 in league play.

Gevon Arrington (Petersburg, Va./Petersburg (Richard Bland)) led all scorers with 25 points, including eight in the second overtime.  The junior guard also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out a team-high five assists while playing all 50 minutes.  Elijah Bush (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore (Essex County CC)) added 20 points (9-15 FG) and eight rebounds.  Cameron Campbell (Fayetteville, N.C./Trinity Christian ) and Sean James (Newark, Del./Christiana (Iona)) chipped in 13 and 12 points respectively.  Deaquan Williams (Camden, N.J./Camden) led the team with a game-high ten rebounds.

Shyheid Petteway came off the bench to lead the Vikings with 15 points.  Zaccheus Hobbs and Aujameq Daniels added 14 points apiece.  John Maynor led the team with six rebounds and six assists.

Arrington was part of the Lions perfect free throw effort in the overtimes, making all eight of his free throws in the second extra stanza.  Campbell scored the Lions remaining five points in the second overtime with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws.

It took a big run from the Vikings in the final 3:18 to force the overtime as the Lions built a seven point lead61-54 with 3:32 in regulation.  Lincoln still led by six with 2:50 to go after Arrington's layup but Hobbs sank two straight three-pointers to tie the game at 63-63 with just under a minute to go.  Both teams missed an opportunity to win the game outright for their team in the final seconds.

The Lions struck first in the overtime with Williams making two free throws. Petteway then did the same for the Vikings.  The two teams exchanged baskets twice, leaving the game tied at 69-69 heading into the final 30 seconds.  Campbell's jumper however rolled around and out as the buzzer sounded and the two teams would continue play.

Petteway made two free throws to open the second overtime, giving the Vikings a 71-69 lead, their first since the 16:07 mark of the second half. Campbell followed with a three-point bucket to put the Lions back on top 72-71 before Arrington made two trips to the charity stripe making all four free throws to boost Lincoln's lead to five 76-71.  Following an ECSU basket, Arrington sank two more free throws to keep the lead at five before Hobbs brought the Vikings within two with a three-point basket, 78-76.    Campbell made two free throws with 1:20 left and Arrington sealed the deal with two more with seven ticks left on the clock to give the Lions the four-point win.

Lincoln doubled up the Vikings at the free throw line, making 26 of 33 (78.8%) to ECSU's 13 of 22 (59.1%).  The Vikings had three more three-pointers (11-8) and three more field goals (27-24) than the Lions and both teams were fairly equal shooting percentage wise (LU-40%; ECSU-37.5%).  The Lions held a 44-40 advantage on the boards while the Vikings committed two fewer turnovers.

The men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 when they host Virginia Union University.  Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
