Lincoln Rallies to Defeat Bluefield State; Earns First Win of Season

The Lincoln University women's softball team rallied from a 5-0 deficit, scoring runs in five consecutive innings to defeat Bluefield State University 11-5 Saturday afternoon at the Shaw University Softball Challenge Tournament played in Apex, North Carolina.

The win snaps a 61-game losing streak by the Lions, dating back to April 13, 2013  when Lincoln defeated Bowie State University 13-11.  The streak was the longest active losing streak in NCAA Division II.  Head Coach Amber Sneed also earns her first win in her second stint as the Lions Head Coach.  Sneed had previously coached the Lincoln softball program from 2012-2014 and returned to the position this season.  Lincoln is now 1-5 on the season.   Bluefield falls to 0-5.

Aundrea Hall (San Antonio, Texas/Naples HS (Italy)) went 1-3 and drove in three runs.  Jasmin Harrison (Bridgeport, Conn./Bassick HS) and Alexis Harrod (Kiribati, South Korea/Seoul American HS) both had two hits apiece.   Harrod also earned the win, improving to 1-3 in 2017.  Harrod gave up five runs (only one earned) on six hits while striking out six.

Bluefield tagged Harrod for four runs in the first inning and another in the second to go ahead 5-0 when the Lions offense came alive in the bottom half of the second inning.

Harrod doubled to centerfield to score Breanna Pigford (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) with the first Lincoln run and later scored on a passed ball to make the score 5-2.  The Lions followed with a four run third inning, all without the benefit of a hit, to take their first lead of the season at 6-5.

Harrison was hit by a pitch, stole second and reached third on a wild pitch.   Tierra Russaw (Westland, Mich./Summit Academy) struck out but reached first on a passed ball.  Russaw then stole second to put two runners in scoring position.  Harrison then scored on a fielder's choice as Martinez struck out and was put out at first after a dropped third strike. Pigford then reached on an error, scoring Russaw.  Harrod reached on a fielder's choice and Kyla Sead (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional HS) reached on an error.  Another Bluefield error, this one a ball hit by Hall to the Bluefield first baseman gave Lincoln the tying and go-ahead runs.

Diamond Scott (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) walked and stole two bases in the inning and later scored on a passed ball to make the score 7-5.  Harrison also singled and stole second in the inning.

Harrod singled and stole second to lead off the fifth before scoring on Hall's one-out double.  Hall stole third and later scored on a passed ball to give the Lions a 9-5 lead.

Lincoln added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Russaw walked and Diana Martinez (Kissimmee, Fla./St. Cloud) reached on a fielder's choice. Russaw went to third on an error and Martinez later stole second before both later scored:  Russaw on a passed ball and Martinez on Pigford's fielder's choice.

Next up for the Lions will be their final game at the Shaw Tournament as they take on Shippensburg University.
