Lions Split Pair of Softball Games on First Day of CIAA Roundup

Jasmin Harrison (Bridgeport, Conn./Bassick HS) had a total of five hits as the Lincoln University women's softball team split their first two games at the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association softball Roundup on Friday, defeating Livingstone College 11-5 in their second game of the day and falling to Shaw University in their opener 14-2.

The Lions' win over Livingstone was their first conference win since the team recorded a two-game sweep at Bowie State on April 13, 2013.  Lincoln improves to 2-7 overall and 1-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association games with today's split.  Shaw improves to 3-17 with their win over the Lions.  Livingstone falls to 1-2.

Harrison had a pair of doubles and a single in four trips to the plate in the win over the Blue Bears of Livingstone, driving in a pair of runs in the process. Aundrea Hall (San Antonio, Texas/Naples HS (Italy)) also drove in two runs and was one of six players besides Harrison to get in hit in the game. Diamond Scott (Piscataway,N.J/Piscataway, N.J.) earned her first win of the season, allowing just three hits and five unearned runs while striking out five in 4 1/3 innings pitched.

Alexis Smoot took the loss for the Blue Bears.

Livingstone jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first off Scott.  After the two run inning, Scott settled down and did not allow a hit over the next three frames as the Lions offense came alive in the top half of the fourth inning.

Lincoln produced their biggest inning of the season in the fourth, sending ten batters to the plate and scoring six times to take a 6-2 lead.  Chauntel Seymour (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck HS) led off the inning with a double and scored on Breanna Pigford (Mullica Hill, NJ/ Kingsway Regional HS )'s single through the left side.  Two batters later, Harrison laced a one-out double to centerfield, scoring Alexis Harrod (Kiribati, South Korea/Seoul American HS) who had reached on an error.  After Tierra Russaw (Westland, Mich./Summit Academy) reached on an error and Harrison stole third, Hall laced a single up the middle to score both runners.  Diana Martinez (Kissimmee, Fla./St. Cloud HS) doubled home Hall two batters later and later scored the Lions final run of the inning on an infield error.

The scoring continued in the fifth inning as Pigford walked and Harrison singled.  Russaw followed with an infield single to score Pigford and two batters later Ashley Juma (Brandywine, Md./Fairmont Hgts. HS) reached on an infield error, allowing both Harrison and Russaw to score, giving the Lions a 9-2 lead.

Livingstone closed the gap to 9-5 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of two errors by the Lions.  The Lions scored their final two runs in their next at-bat as Harrod's groundout scored Seymour and Harrison's grounds rule double to right-centerfield scored Pigford.

Harrod, pitching in relief for Scott retired Livingstone in order in the bottom of the sixth to end the game and give the Lions the win.

Earlier in the day, Shaw University banged out 14 hits as they defeated the Lions 14-2 in five innings.  Harrod took the loss in this game, falling to 1-4 on the season.

Harrison went 2-2 with a double, a walk and a run scored while Russaw drove in both Lincoln runs with a single.  Seymour recorded the only other hit for the Lions.

Shaw jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top half of the first, sending ten batters to the plate with the big blow being a bases clearing double by SU's Kiana Rogers.

Lincoln scored their only two runs in the bottom of the first.  Harrison walked, Seymour singled and Pigford reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases.  After Harrod struck out, Russaw delivered a single to score both Harrison and Seymour.

Shaw added four more runs in the third inning, another three in the fourth and one more in the fifth.  Rogers finished the game with three hits including a two-run home run in the third, giving her five RBI for the game.  Frances Perry earned the win on the mound for the Bears.

The Lions return to action at the CIAA Round up on Saturday with games against host Johnson C. Smith and St. Augustine's University.
