The Lincoln University women's soccer team completed a season sweep of Washington Adventist University with a 3-1 triumph over the Shock in Takoma Park, Maryland.
The win also snaps the Lions three-game losing streak. The game marks the 23
rd meeting between these two programs dating back to 2005. Lincoln improved their all-time record against Washington Adventist (formerly Columbia Union college) to 11-12 all-time. For the 2017 season, the Lions improve to 4-7 with the win, their fourth straight over the Shock. The Shock fall to 3-7.
Kayla Butts (Lansdowne, Pa./Bonner-Prendergast) scored twice and
Diana Martinez (Kissimmee, Fla./St. Cloud) provided the third goal to pace the Lions offense. Goalkeeper Lena Rodriguez recorded seven saves to earn her fourth win of the season.
Butts put the Lions on the scoreboard early in the first half, taking a pass from
Cedar Davidson (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada/Aurora) and putting a shot past Shock goalkeeper Laura Perez for a 1-0 LU lead. It was her fourth goal of the season. Later in the half,
Tara Brookins (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) fed Butts who kicked in her fifth goal of the season and second of the game at the 25:01 mark, giving the Lions a 2-0 advantage.
In the second half, Martinez struck for her seventh goal of the season, fielding a long punt from Rodriguez and kicking it into the net past Perez for a 3-0 Lincoln lead in the 52
nd minute. For Rodriguez it was her first career assist and was also the first assist by a Lions goalkeeper in the history of the women's soccer program.
The Shock got on the board in the 64
th minute when Cristina Reyes scored on a penalty kick, making the score 3-1. Rodriguez was stellar in net the rest of the way for the Lions, recording five saves in the final 20 minutes to preserve the win.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 when they travel to play Trinity Washington University.
