The Lincoln University women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought home match to Chowan University Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Hawks 5-0 at Lions Stadium.
The loss drops the Lions record to 3-7 while Chowan improves to 5-1-2.
Lions goalkeeper
Lena Rodriguez (Lockport, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) made ten saves, several of which came on two-on-one breakaways by the Hawks. Her efforts in the net helped keep the Lions in the game throughout the first half and much of the second.
Chowan got on the board just 1:53 into the game on and added their second goal seven minutes later.  A two-on-one breakaway produced the third Hawks goal in the 34
th minute.
The Lions played much better in the second half on both ends of the field, getting several opportunities on the offensive end but were unable to put the ball in the net. On defense Lincoln limited the Hawks to just six shots on goal in the second half (CU had nine in the first) with Rodriguez making several diving stops to prevent Chowan from scoring. Chowan did score twice though, notching their fourth goal in the 60
th minute and one final tally in the 84
th minute.
Senior
Serena Melendrez (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces) had two of the Lions five shots on goal, including one that hit the crossbar in the first half.Â
Cedar Davidson (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada/Aurora),
Deja Garcia (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and
Diana Martinez (Kissimmee, Fla./St. Cloud) recorded the remaining three shots on goal for the Lions. Â
Lincoln returns to action on Saturday, October 7, 2017 when they travel to Takoma Park Maryland to take on Washington Adventist University.
