Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Martinez Scores Six Goals; Breaks School Record in Win over Valley Forge

Diana Martinez (Kissimmee, Fla./St. Cloud) scored a record-setting six times, breaking the Lincoln University school record for goals and points in a game as the Lions defeated University of Valley Forge  9-3 Friday afternoon in women's soccer action at Lions stadium

The Lions improve to 6-8 on the season while the Patriots fall to 5-7.

Martinez's six goals breaks the Lincoln single game record of five set back in 2008  by Stephanie Anderson.  Anderson's school record of 10 points in a game was also broken by Martinez.   The six goals scored by Martinez is also the most goals scored by an NCAA Division II women's soccer player in game this season.  With 18 goals on the season, Martinez is now tied for second nationally in total goals scored.

The junior forward put the Lions on the board in the 22nd minute breaking ahead of the field to grab a free kick from Taylor Brantley (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) and shoot it past UVF goalkeeper Taniyah Faison for a 1-0 lead. A pass from Cedar Davidson (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada/Aurora) just 67 seconds later led to her second goal at the 23:05 mark and a 2-0 Lions lead.

Martinez went to work in the second half, scoring just 1:40 into the period off a pass from Cleo Spear (Sydney, NSW, Australia/Oxford Falls Grammar School) for her third goal of the game and a 4-1 Lions lead.   A one touch pass from Jasmide Bernard (Lancaster, Pa./McCaskey) late in the 50th minute led to Martinez's fourth goal and gave the Lions a 5-1 lead.

After both teams exchanged two goals apiece, Martinez struck for her fifth goal of the game, tying Anderson's record. She again took a lead pass from Davidson and pushed it past UVF's new keeper  Chelsea Gontz, making the score 8-3.  Late in the 73rd minute Martinez fielded a corner kick from Samanta Sosa (Roatán, Bay Islands, Honduras/Freedom (Harris-Stowe)) and while facing away from the net, chipped it off the back of her foot into the upper left corner for her record setting sixth goal.

Sosa and Alana Ward (Holly Springs, N.C./Trotwood Madison (Ohio)) notched the other goals for the Lions.  Sosa's score, her first of the season came in the first half at the 28:52 mark and was assisted by Ward.  Ward's two scores, her second and third of the season came in the second half.  Her first score followed a kick towards the next from Serena Melendrez (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces) in the 58th minute and her second came early in the 69th minute off a one touch pass from Davidson.

Davidson finished the game with three assists, tying a school record for most assists in game with three others including her teammate Sosa who equaled the mark last week versus Trinity Washington University.

Lions Goalkeeper Lena Rodriguez (Lockport, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) earned her sixth win of the season, the second highest single season total in program history.

The Patriots goals were scored by Kelsey Morrison at the 28:07 mark of the first half; Summer Paisely in the 54th minute and Briana Spellman in the 66th minute.

The Lions return to action on October 25, 2017 when they host Saint Thomas Aquinas College at Lions Stadium.  Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.
