Box Score

The Lions Softball team traveled to Raleigh, NC to start their season. Their first look at competition was at the CIAA roundup held at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. This year's team is returning most of its' roster from last season with one new face junior Alexis Brown (Duneken, NJ). This year's captains are seniors Emily Woodruff (San Diego, CA/Madison HS) and Toni Smith (New Castle, DE/William Penn HS).

In the first game the Lions squared off against the Falcons of St Augustines'. The first hit of the season for the Lions came when senior Diamond Scott (Piscataway, NJ) doubled in her first at bat. The team showed a few cobwebs in the season debut but played extremely well considering their competition was against teams from the south who have the benefit of good weather and a number of games already on the books. The team was defeated. The final score was 5-18. Highlights include senior Diamond Scott (Piscataway, NJ) who had two hits, scored two runs and two RBI's and sophomore Breanna Pigford (Mullica NJ/Kingsway Regional High-School) who had two hits one RBI and a stolen base.

The second game against the Bears of Shaw University saw the Lions swing the bat well again. The team scored 8 runs on 6 hits in the top of the third inning and gave their opponents a good contest. Unfortunately the team's pitcher was injured and couldn't make the trip to Raleigh. This meant the team had to use their backup pitcher senior Diamond Scott (Piscataway, NJ) for back to back games. She made a great effort but fatigue kicked in and the bears were able to capitalize on the Lions lack of depth and put up 18 points.

The first day of the roundup was rescheduled because of bad weather expected to hit the area, to insure that each of the teams competing would be able to play six games. The change required the Lions to play a third game on the first day of the three day event. The team of nine students was fatigued and the unexpected additional game didn't go well. The Lions lost to Winston Salem State 2-14. The bright spot for the Lions was senior Toni Smith (New Castle, DE/William Penn HS) who knocked in the Lions two runs on two hits.

The roundup moved into day three and the Lions faced the Broncos of Fayetteville State University. They were out-numbered and out-gunned. The Lions fell 0-21 and could only muster one hit by sophomore Breanna Pigford (Mullica NJ/Kingsway Regional High-School). This was the only game scheduled for the day as the extra game played the day before to avoid pending inclement weather allowed the roundup to get ahead.

On the final day of competition the Lions faced Johnson C. Smith. The team could only produce one hit and fell 0-16 to a team that will surely contend for the conference championships. The last game of the roundup was against Livingstone College. This was the most competitive game of the roundup for the Lions. The team combined for 7 runs on 6 hits led by Breanna Pigford (Mullica NJ/Kingsway Regional High-School) who had two hits on the day.

The team didn't come home with any wins but surprised themselves on how well they swung the bat after being locked indoors for the first month of the season because of weather. They are looking forward to playing at home, getting their regular starting pitcher back and getting that first win of the season. Their next contest is scheduled for March 29, 2016 against Millersville University in Millersville, Pa. The game times are 4:00 and 6:00 pm.
