Lions Season Ends in Overtime At Virginia State

LIONS AND TROJANS IN OVERTIME

Quaman Burton
Box Score The regular season ends and the Lions of Lincoln lose one more time in the final moments of a ball game. The final score came in overtime as the Trojans of Virginia State University defeated Lincoln 62-66. The Lions played the Trojans who are in first place in the northern division of the CIAA better than the last time the two teams who share the orange and blue color scheme met. Their last game ended with the Trojans defeating the Lions by 18 points. This time around a new game plan made a difference. In fact, the Lions went out front in the first half by 13 points. The Trojans playing in their new 6,200 seat arena for the first time came back and were determined to christen it with a victory. The half ended with the score 35-34 with the Lions ahead.

The second half was a tight contest with neither team being able to gain an advantage that lasted for more than a moment. The Lions were able to gain a slight advantage in the last 2 minutes with a 6 point lead. Unfortunately that lead did not last. The Trojans were able to force a turnover and score quickly. A missed field goal by the Lions led to another basket by the Trojans and the lead was 2 points with 21 seconds. The Trojans attacked the basket and were able to get a whistle and a chance to tie the game with free throws with 1.3 seconds left on the clock. The first free throw was missed and the scramble for the rebound seemed to bounce off the hands of a least one Lion and two Trojans. That last Trojan to tip the ball was able to guide it into the basket before the 1.3 seconds ended and regulation gave way to overtime. The final score of regulation was 59-59.

In overtime the Lions scored the first basket on free throws when Joshua Davis (Saginaw, MI/Louisburg Junior College) stepped to the line and hit two of his 10 points. Another foul one minute later gave him another two free throws. He made one of the two and the Lions didn't score again. The Trojans were only able to score 7 in overtime but that was all they needed for the 4 point victory. The Lions were led in scoring by sophomores Quaman Burton (Richmond, VA/John Marshall HS) and Jordan Watson (Philadelphia, PA/Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) who both scored 11 points. The Trojans were led by Elijah Moore who scored 12. The loss ends the regular season and puts into the record books a 6-10 CIAA conference record and an 8-19 record overall. The Lions are now looking to the post season to find their next victory as the CIAA Championships begin February 23, 2016 at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte NC.
