The shooting woes continued for the Lincoln University women's basketball team as they struggled to produce offense in their 67-52 loss to Johnson C. Smith University Saturday at Manuel Rivero Hall.
The Lions fall to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association games. Â Â The Golden Bulls improve to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in CIAA action.
She'quan Bailey led the Lions with 11 points.Â
Jaeda Davis (Milwaukee, Wis./ Rufus King HS) and
Diamond Mickle (Philadelphia, Pa./Paul VI (Va.) (Harford C.C.)) added 10 points apiece. Bailey also led the team with seven rebounds while
De'jah Taylor (Nanuet, NY/Paramus Catholic Regional) added six. Mickle also had three steals.
Malia Rivers led JCSU with 17 points while Blaire Thomas and Asha Jordan chipped in 13 and 11 respectively. Thomas also led the team with six rebounds. Krista White dished out a game high five assists.
The Lions recorded just three field goals in three of the four quarters of action and finished the game shooting just 27.5% (14-51), their second consecutive game shooting below 35% from the field.  The Golden Bulls finished the game shooting 49% (24-49) from the field including a perfect 8-8 from the field when they pulled away from the Lions.
Lincoln trailed by just two points at the half 26-24 and turned in their best shooting quarter of the game in the third, making five of 12 shots, Yet the golden Bulls opened up an eight point advantage 43-35 by the end of the quarter, making one more field goal and shooting 4-6 from the free throw line ( LU 0-1).
Davis scored four of Lincoln's first five points in the fourth quarter as the Lions closed within five, 45-40 with just under seven minutes to play. The Golden Bulls then pulled away with a 9-0 flourish, opening up a 14-point advantage 54-40 with 4:29 left.  The Lions shaved three points off the lead, closing within 11 with 3:26 left and later pulled within ten at 60-50 with just 1:18 left but were never able to get the deficit to single digits as the Golden Bulls made six of eight free throws in the final 55 seconds to secure the 15-point win.
Turnovers plagued both teams as they combined for 50 in total (26-JSCU; 24-LU). The golden Bulls turned in a stronger inside game, outscoring the Lions 30-12 in the paint while also outrebounding their host 41-34. Both teams had 10 steals on the night.
The Lions return to action on Sunday, December 18, 2016 when they travel to Norfolk, Virginia to take on Division I Norfolk State University, their first road game of the season. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
