Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lions Rally Comes up Short as Lightning Bolts Away with Win

Khayyir Laws (Chester, Pa./Delaware County Community College)' three-point attempt was too strong at the buzzer as the Lincoln University men's basketball team almost completely erased an 11-point second half deficit but were unable to complete the comeback, falling to Goldey-Beacom College 70-67 Saturday at Manuel Rivero Hall.

The Lions fall to 1-6 with the loss as they head into Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play next week.  The Lightning improve to 6-2 with the win.

Jordan Watson (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) led the Lions with 21 points, connecting on 8-15 from the field, including a 4-for-7 effort from three point range.  Joshua Davis (Saginaw, MI/Louisburg Junior College) and Laws added 12 points apiece.  Davis and Carl Lane (Easthampton, N.J/Southeastern Community College) led Lincoln with six rebounds apiece.

Shakeem Wilson was one of three Lightning players in double figures, leading the team with 24 points.  Nick Lawson added 12 off the bench and Corey Taite chipped in 11.  Dante Thompson came off the bench to lead all players with 10 rebounds.

Goldey-Beacom led by as many as 13 early in the second half and still held an 11-point lead, 59-48 with 8:35 left when the Lions began to chip away at the deficit.  A Laws layup was followed by a triple from Watson, cutting the Lightning lead to six 59-53.   GBC's Riyan Williams added a free throw before Vernon Young (Chicago, Ill./University of St. Mary)'s bucket at the 6:23 mark closed the gap to 60-55.  After two more free throws from Wilson, the Laws-Watson combination struck again, with Laws getting a layup followed by another 3-ball from Watson,, making the score 62-60.  Laws added one free throw at the 5:10 mark to pull the Lions within one 62-61.

The Lightning followed with a 5-1 run to take a 67-62 lead with 2:56 left.  Laws added two more free throws at the 1:45 mark to pull within three 67-64 but this would be as close as the Lions would get the rest of the way.   Taite made one of two from the charity stripe and Watson did the same, allowing the Lightning to maintain their three point lead with eight seconds left.   Taite then missed a pair of free throws, giving the Lions one last shot to tie the game.  Laws launched a three point shot as the buzzer sounded but it was too strong and bounced off the rim as the Lightning hung on for the three-point win.

Lincoln shot 43.4% from the field for the game, connecting on 23 of 53 shots.  Goldey-Beacom was slightly better at 46.4% (24-52).  The Lightning made two more three point field goals (7-5) and both teams were fairly even from the charity stripe (LU 16-24, GBC 15-25).  Both teams had 19 turnovers with the Lightning producing a better assist/turnover mark of 14/19 to the Lions 10/19.

The Lions return to action on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 when they open up their 2016-17 CIAA slate of games with a home contest against Livingstone College.  Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
