Jason Epps (Bowie, MD/Bowie High School) touchdown pass in the first quarter provided the only highlight of the afternoon for the Lincoln University football team as host Virginia State University racked up over 500 yards of total offense and defeated the Lions 69-7 at Rogers Stadium in Ettrick, Virginia Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Lions to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action. VSU improves to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in league games.

Epps three eight completions on the day for 100 yards passing and also led the team with 75 yards gained on the ground.
Stephen Scott (Baltimore City, Maryland/Bethel College) caught three passes and also rushed for 42 yards.

Trenton Cannon led VSU with 171 yards rushing, with over half of that coming on one play, a 94-yard run for a touchdown five minutes into the third quarter, his third score of the afternoon, boosting VSU's lead to 48-7 at the time.Â

Lincoln's defense held the VSU offense to a three-and-out in their opening drive and took over possession at midfield for their first drive of the game. After a couple of short runs, Epps connected with
Lance Felder (Brooklyn,NY/Bethany College) for a 20-yard gain to move the Lions to the VSU 24-yard line. A penalty pushed the team back eight yards before Epps connected with
Elijah Smith (Elmont, NY/Monroe College) on second-and-18 for a 32 yard catch and a touchdown.Â
Cody Waddell (Elkton, MD/Northeast High School) kicked the extra point and the Lions had a 7-0 lead just 4:22 into the game.

Turnovers, however proved costly on the Lions next two possessions, both converted for scores by the Trojan offense. The first, a fumble by Scott, which gave the Trojans the ball at the Lincoln-26, led to the first of Cannon's three touchdowns.Â
Solomon Bassett (Saginaw,TX/Boswell High School) blocked the VSU extra point attempt and Lincoln led 7-6 with three minutes left in the first quarter. The second was a fumble by Waddell in the endzone recovered by VSU's Roger Jones for a touchdown. A successful two point conversion gave VSU a 14-7 lead with 1:24 left in the quarter.

The Trojans went on to score eight more touchdowns in the remaining 45 minutes of play and finished the game with 578 yards of total offense to Lincoln's 201.

The Lions will host their final home game of the season next week as they face Bowie State University. Â Kickoff time is 6:00 p.m. at the LU Football Stadium.
