Lady Lions Fall Short In Season Opener to Bloomfield, 3-2

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lady Lions soccer team hosted the Bears of Bloomfield College in their 2015 season-home opener. Lincoln came short in the second half allowing the game winning goal and lost 3-2, on Thursday, September 3rd in LU Stadium. After a solid 45 minutes of action the momentum shifted in the second half towards the Bears.

Junior Tamara Greene (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway HS) put the Lady Lions on the scoreboard first in the early moments of the contest. Greene rebounded her shot against the Bears and found the net past the goalie in the 8th minute of action. Greene led the LU charge on offense with four total shots on goal.

The Bears tied the match in the 24th minute, but an aggressive first half by the Lady Lions helped reclaim the lead shortly after. Junior Christian Harris (Rochester, NY/The Aquinas Institute) caught the feed from senior Audrey Smylie (Baltimore, MD/Western HS) and went one-on-one against the Bloomfield goalie for her first goal of the season at the 33-minute mark. Smylie picked up the assist while Harris gave the Lady Lions a 2-1 advantage with just over ten minutes remaining in the period.

Lincoln fired ten shots in the opening period forcing three saves by Bloomfield. Minutes before halftime the Bears nailed the equalizer goal to tie the game at 2-2 in the 42nd minute.

Both teams battled in the next half but heat and exhaustion caught up with the Lady Lions as two players were unable to continue due to the scorching heat. Bloomfield took advantage of the Lincoln fatigued players and fired 12 second half shots to LU's five attempts. Freshman goalie Kaylee Dennis (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run HS) had a spectacular debut in the orange and blue with all nine of her saves in the final half. The Bears regrouped and netted the game winning goal in the 82nd minute taking the lead late and holding on for a 3-2 road victory.

Lincoln falls to 0-1 while Bloomfield moves to 1-0. LU's Tamara Greene (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway HS) fired five total shots, Christian Harris (Rochester, NY/The Aquinas Institute) followed with four attempts, and junior Alanna Van Ness (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway HS) had three.
