Lincoln Athletics to Implement On-Campus Cardiac Screenings

Sports Medicine | 7/20/2015 12:32:00 PM

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. - The Department of Athletics at Lincoln University is proud to announce a new partnership with Wimbledon Health Partners, the leader in on-campus diagnostic testing. Starting this Fall, all student-athletes will complete a non-invasive vascular ultrasound and echocardiogram as part of the pre-participation requirements.

The purpose of this testing is to identify underlying symptoms related to coronary artery disease, Marfan Syndrome, sudden cardiac arrest, valve disorders, and myocarditis. A recent study reported the incidence rate of Sudden Cardiac Death NCAA student-athletes as high as 1:43,000 and African-American  athletes at a higher rate of 1:1,700.

In an effort to provide the highest level of care for our student-athletes, cardiac screening through Wimbledon Health Partners (dxtesting.com) will exceed the current requirements of the NCAA. As many NCAA Division I institutions are already requiring mandatory cardiac screenings, The Lincoln University will be among the first NCAA Division II schools to include on-campus diagnostic testing. There is no out-of-pocket cost for diagnostic testing for the student-athlete, Wimbledon Health Partners work with insurance providers directly. Policy holders may receive an explanation of benefits following these tests, however these are NOT bills, only a statement.
