Smith Leads Lions at the Plate Versus Mansfield

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Lincoln fell in a double header at home to Mansfield University on Wednesday, April 15th. In game two Steven Smith carried the Lions with four RBIs including a triple and a double base hit.

Ronald Lashley (Brooklyn, NY/Benjamin Banneker Academy) led the Lions with a pair of hits in game one of a double header against Mansfield. In the third inning his single off of a bunt sparked a four run inning getting the Lions back into the game after trailing the Mountaineers 4-0. After DeVante Parker (Bear, DE/Appoquinimink HS) drew a walk, Charles Gibbons (Brooklyn, NY/Genesee CC) hit an RBI single to right field scoring Ronald Lashley (Brooklyn, NY/Benjamin Banneker Academy). John Burns (Virginia Beach, VA/Bishop Sullivan Catholic School) followed with a sacrifice fly out to right field scoring Parker and trimming the Mansfield lead to 4-2. Lincoln's next score came when Terrell Barringer (Philadelphia, PA/Lackwanna College) doubled to center field scoring Gibbons for the RBI. Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) then singled up the middle for an RBI bringing Berringer home from second base tying the game at 4-4.

The Mountaineers responded with one run on one hit in the next inning taking the lead. Lashley singled to left field in the bottom of the fourth but Mansfield broke off six hits for seven runs in the fifth inning to take a huge lead over Lincoln. They added five hits in the seventh inning to down the Lions 17-7.

Pitcher Herman Fortson (Laurel, MD/Laurel HS) struck out four batters in four innings. Relief pitcher Demetrius Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Murrell Dobbins HS) tossed 2.1 innings.

Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) had four RBIs in game two against Mansfield leading the Lions at the plate. He tripled to right field in the second inning scoring Gabriel Santiago (Bronx, NY/Mount Saint Michael Academy) and Brendan Sherman-Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) tying the game at 2-2. Mansfield scored four runs off of three hits in the fourth inning extending their lead.

In the bottom of the fourth Terrell Barringer (Philadelphia, PA/Lackwanna College) singled to center field with two outs. He stole second base and was brought home by Steven Smith's double base hit. The Lions struck again in the fifth inning with an RBI double to center field by Charles Gibbons (Brooklyn, NY/Genesee CC) bringing in Michael Howard (Bronx, NY/Utica College) for the run. Lincoln's next run came in the sixth inning with an RBI ground out to the infield by Smith. The Mountaineers capped the victory with three runs in the seventh inning for a 9-5 final.

Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) finished with two hits and four RBIs. He had a triple and a double while Charles Gibbons (Brooklyn, NY/Genesee CC) had the other double for the Lions. DeVante Parker (Bear, DE/Appoquinimink HS) pitched four innings and struck out one batter in four innings of work,

The Lions fall to 2-27 and will host Virginia State University in a weekend series beginning on Saturday, April 18th at 1 p.m.
