NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Lions opened their 2015 season on the road against Newberry College and loss 11-1 on Wednesday, February 25
th.
Sophomore catcher
Gabriel Santiago (Bronx, NY/Mount Saint Michael Academy) singled through the left side in the fourth inning for an RBI bringing in
Charles Gibbons (Brooklyn, NY/Genesee CC) for the Lions only score against the Wolves. Gibbons reached base on a walk and advanced to second base on a groundout.
The Lions had five total hits led by junior infielder Terrell Berringer's team-high two. Berringer led off with a single through the right side in the first inning and then blasted a shot to left field in the eighth inning. Sophomore infielder
DeVante Parker (Bear, DE/Appoquinimink HS) hit a triple in the sixth inning to center field for his only hit while
Edwin Rivera (Bronx, N.Y./Gompers HS) had the Lions other hit in the second inning.
Newberry took a 2-0 lead in the second inning before the Lions cut into their lead with an RBI single in their productive fourth inning. The wolves then added three runs in the third inning, one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the eighth inning.
Lincoln sent five pitchers to the mound against Newberry combining for ten strikeouts. Sophomore Terence Berry tossed three strikeouts despite picking up the loss and only surrendered one hit. The Lions fall to 0-1 and will face Claflin in a double header on Thursday, February 26
th.
