VSU Downs LU Volleyball , 3-0

Ettrick, Va. – Mariah Russell (St. Louis, MO/Maplewood Richmond Heights HS) paced the Lady Lions with seven kills in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-18) loss to Virginia State University on Tuesday, November 3rd on the road in a CIAA Northern Divisional matchup.
 
Lincoln took a 19-13 lead in the first set paced by Mariah Russell (St. Louis, MO/Maplewood Richmond Heights HS).  She scored the 16th point of the set on a service ace. Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) blocked the Trojan attacker for the 17th point and VSU had a bad set for the 18th point. The next point came on a kill by Toni Smith (New Castle, DE/William Penn HS) extending the LU advantage.
 
Virginia State responded with three points pulling with a 19-16 lead. On the next point Lee's kill was assisted by Shanna King (Newark, NJ/University High School) for a 20-16 score. VSU tied the match at 22-22 with a kill and ten downed the Lady Lions 25-23 to win set 1.
 
In the second set VSU exploded with 16 team kills to LU's six. Toni Smith (New Castle, DE/William Penn HS) had a team-high two kills in that set while Shanna King (Newark, NJ/University High School) led defensively with five digs. Lincoln fell in set three 25-16 after committing seven errors. Mariah Russell (St. Louis, MO/Maplewood Richmond Heights HS) pitched in with three kills and Kyra Orton (Detroit, MI/Renaissance HS) had seven digs for the Lady Lions.  
 
The Lady Lions recorded a three-set season-high 63 digs against the Trojans. Kyra Orton (Detroit, MI/Renaissance HS) posted a team-high 15 digs and Sydney Cook (Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) had 13 digs. Both Soyini Hugget (Bear, DE/Delaware Tech CC) and Shanna King (Newark, NJ/University High School) collected 12 digs each with King adding 18 assists. Mariah Russell (St. Louis, MO/Maplewood Richmond Heights HS) netted seven kills and Toni Smith (New Castle, DE/William Penn HS) finished with five kills.
 
Lincoln falls to 5-13 overall and 4-11 in CIAA play. Virginia State moves to 16-8 overall after their victory. The Lady Lions travel to Bowie State for their regular-season finale on Friday, November 13th at 7 p.m.
