LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lions suffered a 75-74 loss in heartbreaking fashion to Adelphi University on Monday, November 30
th in Manuel Rivero Hall.
Joshua Davis (Saginaw, MI/Louisburg Junior College) led the Lions with 14 points and seven rebounds.
The Lions posted season-highs in their final game in the month of November. LU made 30 total field goals, dished out 18 assists, made eight three pointers, and blocked four shots against the Panthers.
Adelphi shot the ball well from the field in the opening half. The Panthers were 51% (15-of-29) from the field and 42% (6-of-14) from three point range. The Lions followed shooting 47% (17-of-36) from the field and 46% (5of-11) from long range.
Joshua Davis (Saginaw, MI/Louisburg Junior College) nailed two three pointers scoring 12 first half points and the Lions first eight points of the game.
Tracey Nelson (Waldorf, MD/University of Maryland Eastern Shore) was inserted into the lineup midway through the first half and added seven points from the bench. Nelson hit a three pointer and made two shots from the field.
Lincoln fell behind by eight points with 5:05 left in the half but came back to tie the game on a jumper by
Blair Davis (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore City College HS). The Panthers came back down the court and took a 43-41 lead prior to the half.
In the second half of play the Lions rallied from behind and led 57-56 at the 11:16 mark. Their lead grew to no more than three as both teams battled defensively.
Down the stretch,
Malachi Seney (Philadephia, PA/Harfprd Community College)'s three pointer tied the game at 69-69 with 2:33 left to play. Adelphi responded with a three pointer of their own to take back the lead and then hit another one with 1:45 remaining to push their lead to four (75-71). Lincoln's
Quaman Burton (Richmond, VA/John Marshall HS) cut the deficit to two on a jumper from the far right side of the court. The LU defense forced a turnover on Adelphi's next possession with 57 seconds on the clock.
Burton was fouled and went to the free throw line with 46 seconds left for two attempts. He was successful on one attempt as the Lions still trailed 75-74. With 17 seconds on the clock the Panthers missed on a three pointer leaving LU with one last chance. Adelphi fouled
Vernon Young (Chicago, IL/University of St. Mary) with seven seconds left sending him to the charity stripe. Young missed both attempts at the line as the score remained 75-74. After a quick foul and a missed free throw by the Panthers, Lincoln still had a chance to win the game with three seconds left but their final attempt missed from long range suffering their third loss in a row, 75-74.
Quaman Burton (Richmond, VA/John Marshall HS) scored ten second half points while
Charles Cooley (Brentwood, MD/University of Charleston) and
Malachi Seney (Philadephia, PA/Harfprd Community College) both scored six points. Adelphi remained hot from long range making six shots from deep and outrebounding the Lions 20-16 in the final half.
Three Lions netted double figure scoring led by
Joshua Davis (Saginaw, MI/Louisburg Junior College)' 14 points. Davis also had a team-high seven rebounds and made a career-high two three pointers.
Quaman Burton (Richmond, VA/John Marshall HS) led the bench scoring with 12 points, four assists, and three rebounds.
Charles Cooley (Brentwood, MD/University of Charleston) finished with 11 points on 5-of-6 made shots from the field and added three assists and three rebounds.
Blair Davis (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore City College HS) had a season-high four assists and three rebounds.
Tracey Nelson (Waldorf, MD/University of Maryland Eastern Shore) had a season-high seven points and Malchi Seney had six points with a season-high three assists.
Lincoln drops to 1-5 overall and Adelphi moves to 6-1 overall after their hard fought battle. Lincoln will host rival Cheyney in the annual Battle of the Firsts on Wednesday, December 2
nd at 7 p.m. This will mark the 25th meeting since the 1991-92 season (records dating back) in which the Lions and Wolves have tangled on the court. Lincoln won the last four meetings between the rivals and nine overall.
