Burton’s Career Night Falls Short in Overtime to West Virginia Wesleyan, 83-76

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – Quaman Burton (Richmond, VA/John Marshall HS) recorded a career-high 29 points, but the Lions loss in overtime to West Virginia Wesleyan, 83-76, on Saturday, Nov. 14th on the final day of the Joe Retton Classic.

Lincoln trailed 37-27 at the half but came back in the second half outscoring the Bobcats 42-32 as the game went into overtime. The Lions took their first lead of the game with 1:41 left in the second half but a late three pointer by the Bobcats forced overtime. Quaman Burton (Richmond, VA/John Marshall HS) came out firing for the Lions scoring 15 of his 29 points in the first half. He made all three of his attempts from long range and added on four made free throws. The Lions went 8-for-10 at the free throw line with Vernon Young (Chicago, IL/University of St. Mary) making 3-of-4 early attempts.

West Virginia Wesleyan shot 60% (15of-25) from the field on 13 assists in the first half. The Lions were held to 34% (8-of-23) but forced eight turnovers in an effort to remain close. The Bobcats kept the pressure on the Lions heading into the second half and extended their lead to 15 (50-35) with 11:25 left to play.

LU's Joshua Davis (Saginaw, MI/Louisburg Junior College) came up with a steal and thunderous dunk igniting a Lincoln second half rally. Charles Cooley (Brentwood, MD/University of Charleston) and Vernon Young (Chicago, IL/University of St. Mary) both hit jumpers as the Bobcat advantage was cut to five (54-49) with eight minutes to go. Young scored ten second half points while Davis and Burton both had nine each. Defensively, Lincoln held West Virginia Wesleyan to 11 made baskets and into ten turnovers. Malachi Seney (Philadephia, PA/Harfprd Community College) also came off the Lions bench and drained a three pointer with 2:35 remaining as LU trailed 65-63.

With the momentum and two converted free throws by Cooley the Lions finally battled back and tied the game at 65-65 at the 2:17 mark. Vernon Young (Chicago, IL/University of St. Mary) came up with a steal and then Quaman Burton (Richmond, VA/John Marshall HS) scored the basket giving the Lions their first lead of the game. Burton went on to make a pair of free throws with 48 seconds left stretching the LU lead to 69-66. Despite the heroic comeback by Lincoln, West Virginia Wesleyan tied the game with a three pointer leaving three seconds on the game clock. LU's last attempt at a buzzer beater fell short and the game was sent into overtime.

In the extra session, Lincoln committed three costly turnovers as the Bobcats took a 77-69 lead. Quaman Burton (Richmond, VA/John Marshall HS) scored five points in the extra session and Malachi Seney (Philadephia, PA/Harfprd Community College) hit a jumper, but that was not enough as West Virginia Wesleyan used six made from the charity stripe winning 83-76 in overtime. The Lions fall to 0-2 after a pair of losses to Fairmont State and West Virginia Wesleyan.

Quaman Burton (Richmond, VA/John Marshall HS) netted a career-high 29 points on 9-of-19 shots from the field. He made a career-best five three pointers and made all six of his free throws. Vernon Young (Chicago, IL/University of St. Mary) had a double-double scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Young also led the Lions defensively with four steals. Malachi Seney (Philadephia, PA/Harfprd Community College) contributed ten points along with Joshua Davis (Saginaw, MI/Louisburg Junior College) while Charles Cooley (Brentwood, MD/University of Charleston) dished out seven assists.

Lincoln plays their third out of four road games opening the 2015-16 season on Nov. 20th against Chestnut Hill at 4pm.
