LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lady Lions defeated Bowie State University in straight-sets 3-0 (29-27, 25-14, 26-26) on Thursday, October 8
th in their annual Homecoming game. Senior
Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) led the attack with nine kills.
Lincoln improved to 4-6 overall and to 3-4 in CIAA play with their victory over Bowie State. The Lady Lions collected a season-best 63 digs in three sets and also had a season-best 125 total attempts. Senior
Soyini Hugget (Bear, DE/Delaware Tech CC) posted three kills in the opening set to get things rolling for the Lady Lions. Junior
Kyra Orton (Detroit, MI/Renaissance HS) carried the defense with six digs as Bowie State committed ten errors. Both teams battled back and forth but in the end Lincoln pulled out a 26-24 win.
In the second set, Lincoln dominated with nine kills and only four errors. The Bulldogs was forced into ten errors with only seven kills.
Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) finished with four kills on seven attempts and junior
Shanna King (Newark, NJ/University High School) added two kills. Lincoln's defense anchored them to victory (25-14) with 18 digs paced by senior
Sydney Cook (Portland, OR/Cleveland HS).
The third set was an exciting one as the Lady Lions fought back in the final moments. Bowie State ripped off four consecutive points after a 20-20 tie. Lincoln trailed 24-20 before
Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) and the Lady lions came roaring back. Lee connected on an assist from King to pull LU within three points. The second point was earned on an assisted block from Lee and Hugget while the next was scored on a solo block by Lee.
Lincoln rallied back and finally tied the match at 24-24 on a kill by Orton. Now with the momentum LU closed the match on Lee's third kill of the set and a ball handling error by the Bulldogs to come from behind and win 26-24.
The Lady Lions return to action at home on Monday, October 12
th at 7p.m. with a CIAA Northern Divisional battle against Virginia State University in Manuel Rivero Hall.
