Lincoln Stumbles in 3-0 Loss to Virginia State

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lady Lions had a season-high nine team blocks in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-12) loss to Virginia State University on Monday, October 12th in Manuel Rivero Hall. Junior Keldesha Spencer (Nassau, Bahamas/Kingsway Academy) assisted on seven blocks while senior Soyini Hugget (Bear, DE/Delaware Tech CC) added four blocks assisted.
 
Lincoln falls to 4-7 overall and 3-5 in CIAA play. The Lady Lions showed progress in their net defense finishing with 16 assisted blocks. Senior Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) was the lone Lady Lion to record a solo block but Keldesha Spencer (Nassau, Bahamas/Kingsway Academy) was a force with seven assisted blocks.
 
VSU tallied 16 kills in the first set while Lincoln struggled with eight errors. Sophomore Mariah Russell (St. Louis, MO/Maplewood Richmond Heights HS) led the charge with two kills in a 25-20 defeat. In the second set, VSU was forced into 11 team errors keeping LU within striking distance. Soyini Hugget (Bear, DE/Delaware Tech CC) had two kills with eight digs and senior Sydney Cook (Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) had a team-high nine digs. Lincoln battled back from a 24-12 deficit scoring ten straight points in a late rally, but the Trojans pulled out a close 25-22 win.
 
LU's Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) had two of the Lady Lions three totaled kills in set three. VSU connected on 10-of-28 attacks to straight-set the Lady Lions 25-12. Lincoln had a tough time in the final set committing nine errors.
 
Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) finished with a team-high four kills. She had two service aces, two digs, and a solo block. Mariah Russell (St. Louis, MO/Maplewood Richmond Heights HS) followed with three kills and eight digs. Senior Toni Smith (New Castle, DE/William Penn HS) had two kills along with Soyini Hugget (Bear, DE/Delaware Tech CC) while Cook led defensively with 11 digs.
 
The Lady Lions return to action on Sunday, October 18th when they host Elizabeth City State at 6 p.m.
