LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lady Lions volleyball team suffered two losses on the first day of the CIAA Volleyball Round-Up to Shaw University and St. Augustine's University. Senor
Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) posted 10 kills in both games leading the Lady Lions.
Lincoln University hosted the CIAA Volleyball Round-Up featuring five other CIAA institutions; Shaw, St. Augustine's, Fayetteville State, Bowie State, and Virginia Union in Manuel Rivero Hall.
Mariah Russell (St. Louis, MO/Maplewood Richmond Heights HS) and
Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) combined for 21 kills in a 3-1 (25-16, 13-25, 25-20, 25-11) loss to Shaw in the Lady Lions opening game of the 2015 CIAA Volleyball Round-Up. Russell led the Lady Lions with 11 kills and five digs while Lee had ten kills and two blocks assisted.
Shaw won the opening set 25-16.
Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) had a team-high four kills and added two assisted blocks for LU. Lincoln won set two 25-13 behind solid defense. Shaw was forced into 11 errors and Lincoln produced a team attack percentage of .182 in the set.
Mariah Russell (St. Louis, MO/Maplewood Richmond Heights HS) and
Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) both had three kills each followed by
Soyini Hugget (Bear, DE/Delaware Tech CC) and
Keldesha Spencer (Nassau, Bahamas/Kingsway Academy)'s two kills apiece.
The Lady Lions had a difficult time the rest of the way falling to Shaw 25-20 in set three and 25-11 in set four.
Shanna King (Newark, NJ/University High School) notched 28 assists,
Sydney Cook (Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) had 22 digs, and
Kyra Orton (Detroit, MI/Renaissance HS) pitched in with 17 digs.
Lincoln's next game was against St. Augustine's. The Falcons were victorious by a score of 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-20, 25-14).
Once again the Lady Lions had a strong second set picking up the win 25-21.
Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) had five kills in that set and also had two solo blocks.
Sydney Cook (Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) carried the defense with six digs as the Falcons committed seven team errors.
St. Augustine's took the first set 25-13. LU had 11 errors and struggled offensively with only five kills in the set. After taking a loss in set two, SAU bounced back in the next two sets downing Lincoln 25-20 and 25-14.
Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) had a team-high ten kills and four solo blocks.
Mariah Russell (St. Louis, MO/Maplewood Richmond Heights HS) had six kills and
Toni Smith (New Castle, DE/William Penn HS) had four kills.
Shanna King (Newark, NJ/University High School) finished with 21 assists and
Sydney Cook (Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) had 19 digs.
Lincoln falls to 5-11 overall and 4-9 in CIAA play after day one. The Lady Lions will take on Fayetteville State University at 11 am on Sunday, November 1
st in Manuel Rivero Hall.
