LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lions passed for a season-high 132 yards against the Trojans in a 35-0 loss at home on Saturday, October 24
th.
Virginia State scored two first quarter touchdowns and added on a third score early in the second quarter. Lincoln's offense produced 130 yards of offense led by quarterback
Edward McKenzie (Paterson, NJ/Lackwanna College) in the first two quarters. McKenzie was 6-for-11 in the first half for 90 yards and found four receivers. Wide receiver
Larquise Hobbs (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton HS) caught a 42-yard pass in the second quarter that put the Lions in the red zone.
Lincoln gave up two more touchdowns in the third quarter as their offense continued to struggle. Freshman quarterback
Jacob Luke (Starke, FL/Bradford HS) went 3-for-6 in the third quarter for 24 passing yards. Seniors
Bradley Martin (Philadelphia, PA/Vermillion CC),
Lance Felder (Brooklyn, NY), and
Brandon Rowe (Harlem, NY/Hudson Valley CC) were the recipients.
After the Trojans took a 35-0 lead with 1:33 left in the third quarter, senior
Jaleel Reddick (Newark, NJ/Morgan State University) returned the kickoff for a huge gain. Reddick and the LU special teams collected 63 yards setting up the Lions on the VSU 26 yard line. Lincoln turned the ball over on the next play as the Trojans recovered a fumble with the quarter winding down.
No touchdowns were scored in the fourth quarter with Virginia State holding onto to their 35 point advantage as time expired. Lincoln drops to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in CIAA play while Virginia State improves to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in CIAA play. Lincoln's last shut out at home was in 2014 against North Carolina Wesleyan (27-0). Virginia State moves to 12-0 in the all-time series against the Lions.
Edward McKenzie (Paterson, NJ/Lackwanna College) completed 8-of-14 pass attempts for 100 yards while
Jacob Luke (Starke, FL/Bradford HS) finished 4-of-8 for 32 yards.
Larquise Hobbs (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton HS) tallied a team-high three catches for 65 yards.
Bradley Martin (Philadelphia, PA/Vermillion CC) caught three passes for 26 yards and
Lance Felder (Brooklyn, NY) had two catches for 23 yards.
Jaleel Reddick (Newark, NJ/Morgan State University) recorded LU's longest kickoff return of the season with his 63 yard return. Sophomore
Brett Arkelian (Clovis, CA) had two punts inside the VSU 20-yard line. Arkelian finished with seven punts averaging 39.9 yards per punt.
Defensively,
Stephanos Ghebrehiwet (Miami, FL/North Miami Beach HS) made a team-high eight tackles including seven solo stops and one pass break up.
Kevin Norris (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown HS) followed with seven stops along with
Brion Robinson (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook HS) and
Solomon Bassett (Forth Worth, TX/Boswell HS). Bassett recorded his first sack of the season against the Trojans.
Lincoln travels to Bowie, MD for their next game on Saturday, October 31
st to tangle with the Bulldogs of Bowie State University in a CIAA Northern Division battle.
