LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Five seniors played in their final home game at The Lincoln University against Chowan University on Monday, October 19
th . The Lady Lions loss in straight sets to the Hawks 3-0 (25-12, 25-23, 25-21) led by senior
Sydney Cook (Portland, OR/Cleveland HS)'s season-high 29 digs.
Lincoln got off to a rough start against the top team in the CIAA Northern Division. Chowan had 19 kills and one error in a 25-12 first set victory. LU's
Soyini Hugget (Bear, DE/Delaware Tech CC) posted three kills and
Shanna King (Newark, NJ/University High School) added two kills while
Sydney Cook (Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) tallied 12 digs.
In the next set Lincoln improved their play with 11 combined kills and forced Chowan into eight errors. Both teams battled back and forth but in the end Chowan pulled out a 25-23 win going ahead 2-0 in the match. Sophomore
Mariah Russell (St. Louis, MO/Maplewood Richmond Heights HS) had four kills in the second set, junior
Keldesha Spencer (Nassau, Bahamas/Kingsway Academy) had three kills and a solo block, and Cook added six more digs to her total.
In the third set
Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) led the way with four kills. Chowan committed nine errors but had 11 kills to stay within striking distance of the Lady Lions. Cook once again reached double figures in digs with 11, but Lincoln allowed Chowan to come from behind trailing 20-15. The Hawks ended the game with nine consecutive points, 25-21.
Jillian Lee (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly Institute) had a team-high seven kills and a solo block.
Soyini Hugget (Bear, DE/Delaware Tech CC),
Keldesha Spencer (Nassau, Bahamas/Kingsway Academy), and
Mariah Russell (St. Louis, MO/Maplewood Richmond Heights HS) each had five kills apiece and
Shanna King (Newark, NJ/University High School) finished with 22 assists.
Sydney Cook (Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) had a game-high 29 digs leading the Lady Lions defensively. Lincoln drops to 5-8 overall and 4-6 in CIAA play. Chowan moves to 13-3 overall and 10-0 in CIAA play.
Lincoln travels to Virginia Union University for their next match on October 26
th at 7 p.m. in Richmond, Va.
