Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Goal Gives Lions Soccer 1-0 Victory Over Concordia (NY)

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Senior Tara O'Brien (Twickenham London, UK/St. Mark's Catholic School) nailed the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute leading the Lions to a 1-0 win at home over Concordia (NY).

The women's soccer team could not have asked for better weather. It was 79 degrees at game time and the sun was shining directly on the beautiful Lions Stadium field. The game began and within five minutes the crowd who had gathered knew it was going to be a game of attrition. The Lions fired six shots in the first half but the Concordia College Clippers were ready and willing to play defense for as long as it took. The intensity was sustained throughout the first half and lead to no scores.

Who would get tired first was the question on everyone's mind. The two teams came back from the break and continued to play hard and fast. The second half saw shots on goal by Christian Harris (Rochester, NY/The Aquinas Institute), Tara O'Brien (Twickenham London, UK/St. Mark's Catholic School) and Alanna Van Ness (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway HS). Each time the defense of Concordia was up to the challenge until senior forward Tara O'Brien (Twickenham London, UK/St. Mark's Catholic School) got between two defenders after a corner kick and used her ball handling skills to perfection to score the one and only goal of the game in the 62nd minute. That was O'Brien's sixth goal of the season. From that point on the Lions played with attention to detail and made certain they maintained their concentration and intensity. Their passes were better timed while they spread the field to minimize the scoring opportunities of the Clippers.

Tara O'Brien (Twickenham London, UK/St. Mark's Catholic School) led the Lions with seven shots and two shots on goal. Averri Glenn (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway HS) added two shot attempts and a host of others fired one attempt. Defensively, Emily Woodruff (San Diego, CA/Madison HS) had one save at goalkeeper in relief of starter Christian Harris (Rochester, NY/The Aquinas Institute).

The victory gives the Lions a 3-3-1 record at the midpoint of their season. Their next opponent will be Tuesday September 30, at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia PA. The game starts at 4:00 pm.
