Shaw Defeats Lions Football, 38-27

DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Anthony Green (Chester, PA/Upper Darby HS) led the Lions with a career-high seven catches for 83 yards along with a touchdown as Shaw downed Lincoln 38-27 in the CIAA opener on Saturday, September 27th at Durham County Stadium.

Lincoln's Doug Cook (Dania Beach, FL/University School of Nova SE University) finished with 202 total passing yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Bears. Cook completed 22-of-38 attempts to six different receivers led by senior Anthony Green (Chester, PA/Upper Darby HS). Green led the wide receivers with a career-high seven catches and collected 83 yards and a touchdown. After a 13-12 lead by the Lions, Shaw responded with 18 unanswered points heading into the fourth quarter. Doug Cook (Dania Beach, FL/University School of Nova SE University) tossed two touchdowns in the final quarter but Shaw held on for a 38-27 CIAA victory. Lincoln and Shaw last met in Durham County Stadium back in 2008 when the Bears defeated the Lions 56-7. The Lions had a stronger outing in 2014 with four touchdowns.

Shaw scored on their opening drive of the afternoon against the Lions. The Bears used three plays and covered 51 yards for their score. After a quick three-and-out by the Lions, Shaw's special teams fumbled on a punt return that was recovered by the Lions. Lincoln was unable to capitalize off of the Shaw turnover missing on a 34-yard field goal attempt.

The Lions defense changed the momentum of the game forcing a turnover on Shaw's second drive. Defensive back Brion Robinson (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook HS) returned a 35-yard interception for a touchdown putting Lincoln on the board, 7-6. After a second Shaw touchdown, the Lions also found the endzone on a two-yard rushing touchdown by running back Stephen Scott (Baltimore, MD/Bethel College). Lincoln led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter but trailed 18-13 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Shaw extended their lead to 30-13. Lincoln's offense had a tough time finding their groove until the end of the quarter when Doug Cook (Dania Beach, FL/University School of Nova SE University) and Anthony Green (Chester, PA/Upper Darby HS) connected on a 29-yard touchdown cutting into the Shaw lead 30-20. With 3:21 left in the regulation, wide receiver Akeem Jordan (Washington, DC/Carroll HS) caught a 15-yard touchdown from Cook making it a 38-27 game.

Stephen Scott (Baltimore, MD/Bethel College) finished with 84 rushing yards on 23 carries as the Lions pounded out 100 total yards rushing. Doug Cook (Dania Beach, FL/University School of Nova SE University) added 18 yards rushing and had 202 passing yards. Green had seven catches for 83 yards while sophomore Larquise Hobbs (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton HS) has six catches for 53 yards and senior Akeem Jordan (Washington, DC/Carroll HS) had five catches for 65 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, junior Lance Felder (Brooklyn, NY) had a game-high nine tackles. Felder recorded eight solo tackles, a sack for a loss of ten yards, and had two tackles for a loss of yardage. Senior Gavin Lampkin (Baltimore, Md./W.E.B. Dubois HS) also had nine tackles with three tackles for a loss of yards. Sophomore Wadel Louis (Miami, FL/North Miami Beach HS) had eight tackles, two pass breakups, and a quarterback hurry.

Lincoln falls to 1-3 and 0-1 in CIAA play. The Lions will host Fayetteville State in LU Stadium on Saturday, October 4th at 1 p.m. in their next game.
