CHEYNEY, Pa. – The Lincoln University women's volleyball team opened their 2014 season against rival Cheyney University, but came up short in a 3-2 loss (25-21, 25-17, 13-25, 21-25, and 11-15) on Tuesday, September 9
th. Freshman
Ashanti Price (Upper Marlboro, MD/Bishop McNamara HS) had a team-high 18 kills while adding 24 digs for the Lady Lions.
Lincoln won the first two sets (25-21, 25-17) springing to an early series lead over Cheyney in their first action of the year. The Lady Lions recorded 10 kills in each set and held the Wolves to five kills and into 14 combined errors on the road. On the verge of a Lady Lions straight-set sweep, Cheyney responded with 12 kills and three errors in the third set and won, 25-13.
The teams continued to battle, but Lincoln committed a game-high 12 errors in the fourth set as Cheyney tied the match 2-2 with a hard fought 25-21 victory. Despite 14 team kills by the Lady Lions, the Wolves only had three errors and reclaimed the momentum at home heading into the final set. In the fifth and deciding set, eight Lady Lion errors led to a Cheyney 15-11 win.
In her Lady Lions debut,
Ashanti Price (Upper Marlboro, MD/Bishop McNamara HS) had 18 kills, 24 digs, four assists, and two service aces. Junior Jillan Lee had seven kills, four digs, and three solo blocks, while sophomore
Keldesha Spencer (Nassau, Bahamas/Kingsway Academy) added six kills. Sophomore
Shanna King (Newark, NJ/University High School) tallied a game-high 19 assists with 13 digs and junior
Sydney Cook (Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) collected a game-high 31 digs.
Lincoln drops to an overall record of 0-1 early in the 2014 season and will head to Richmond, VA for the CIAA Volleyball Round-Up hosted by Virginia Union University on September 13-14.
