Lions Late Rally Falls Short Against Southern New Hampshire, 66-64

Box Score Lincoln University, PA – James Stewart (Washington, DC/Charles Herbert Flowers HS) scored 11 points to lead the Lions, but Lincoln fell to Southern New Hampshire in a close 66-64 non-conference contest on Tuesday, February 4th in Manuel Rivero Hall.

The Lions forced eight turnovers in the opening half that led to eight much needed offensive points. Lincoln shot 46% (13-28) from the field and made only two shots from behind the arc. Junior forward Tony Efese (Spring Valley, NY/St. Joseph Regional HS) and senior guard George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) both hit shots from three-point range, but the Lions struggled from the free-throw line converting on 1-of-5 attempts. Senior forward Chris Kinney (Washington, DC/Theodore Roosevelt SHS) grabbed five rebounds and scored four points to lead the Lions after 20-minutes of play. Southern New Hampshire shot 52% (13-25) from the field and held a 33-29 advantage at the half over Lincoln.

Senior Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) paced the Lions in the second half with 11 points. Washington hit two three-pointers as Lincoln continued to struggle from the field. Southern New Hampshire held the Lions to 37% (11-30) and 25% (2-8) from three-point range.

The Penmen led for majority of the evening until the final six minutes. Lincoln's bench sparked an 11-point comeback led by Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) and sophomore guard James Stewart (Washington, DC/Charles Herbert Flowers HS). The duo combined for 18 of the team's 35-second half points while the LU bench outscored Southern New Hampshire, 22-7.

Trailing Southern New Hampshire 63-59 with less than two and a half minutes left in regulation, Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) drained a three-pointer then James Stewart (Washington, DC/Charles Herbert Flowers HS) followed with a fast-break basket to tie the game with 1:51 remaining.

Shortly after, the Lions allowed an offensive rebound and a quick score as the Penmen took a 66-64 lead with 1:25 left to play. Lincoln failed to convert on a final basket and dropped their final non-conference game of the season to Southern New Hampshire, 66-64.

James Stewart (Washington, DC/Charles Herbert Flowers HS) and Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) both scored 11 points to lead the Lions coming off the bench. Lincoln's bench outscored Southern New Hampshire 32-21. George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) added nine points with four assists and Tony Efese (Spring Valley, NY/St. Joseph Regional HS) scored eight points with six rebounds. Chris Kinney (Washington, DC/Theodore Roosevelt SHS) led the Lions with seven rebounds and Justin Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) had three steals and three assists.

The Lions fall to 15-6 overall and will travel to Bowie, MD for a nationally televised game on Saturday, February 8th at 4 p.m. against Bowie State University.
