Clark Nets Career-High Against Virginia State

Box Score PETERSBURG, VA – Sophomore guard Amani Clark (Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink HS) had a career-high 23 points against the Lady Trojans in a 75-64 defeat for The Lincoln University in their season finale on Saturday, February 22nd. Clark made three shots from behind the arc and converted on a perfect 6-of-6 attempts from the line.

Amani Clark (Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink HS) scored 12 points in the opening half including 2-of-3 made three-pointers. Freshman De'jah Taylor (Nanuet, NY/Paramus Catholic Regional) anchored the bench with seven points and Courtney Lucas (Washington, DC/Friendship Collegiate Academy) added five points and grabbed four rebounds. Lincoln drained four three-pointers and forced 16 VSU turnovers that led to 12 points in the first half. Virginia State trailed 28-20 with 1:20 left in the half after sophomore guard Courtney Smith (Milwaukee, WI/Nicolet HS) knocked down a three-pointer giving the Lady Lions their largest lead of the half. In the final minute of the half, VSU made a pair of free-throws and a shot from behind the arc to cut the Lincoln lead to 28-25 at halftime.

The Lady Lions began the second half on a 7-0 run. Courtney Smith (Milwaukee, WI/Nicolet HS) hit another triple while Amani Clark (Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink HS) and Cynthia Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) both hit layups. Lincoln was ahead 39-27 at the 17:08 mark before the Lady Trojans stormed back with a run of their own. VSU went on a 10-0 run and found themselves ahead 50-49 with 8-minutes left in regulation.

Late turnovers and poor shooting by the Lady Lions allowed VSU to dominate the second half. Virginia State outscored Lincoln 50-36 and forced 17 turnovers in the half. Despite making 5-of-11 three-pointers in the second half, Lincoln struggled defensively as VSU shot 58% from the field. Courtney Smith (Milwaukee, WI/Nicolet HS) led the Lady Lions with 13 second half points including four three-pointers and Amani Clark (Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink HS) added 11 points with three assists. The Lady Trojans took the lead and held on for a 75-64 victory sweeping the Lady Lions this season.

Amani Clark (Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink HS) had 23 points on 7-of-14 shots from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. She also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Courtney Smith (Milwaukee, WI/Nicolet HS) had a season-high 16 points with six assists and three steals. De'jah Taylor (Nanuet, NY/Paramus Catholic Regional) scored nine points and Courtney Lucas (Washington, DC/Friendship Collegiate Academy) added seven points.

The Lady Lions conclude their regular season at 11-15 and 4-12 CIAA. Lincoln looks to make a run at the 2013-14 CIAA Basketball Championships in Charlotte, NC.
